One of the best, if not the best, underwater science fiction films. I remember the first time I saw the Abyss as an amazing big screen experience in 1989. It is even better in 4K UHD Blu-ray with bigger sound and brighter colors. The visual special effects of aliens living deep in the ocean are out of this world (pun intended). This James Cameron movie is of the same high caliber as his blockbuster that would appear on the big screen twenty years later. Watching one of the bonus features - Under Pressure: Making The Abyss gave me a greater appreciation for what it took to make this film.

I am not a movie expert in any way. That said, the abyss is one of my favorite movies. Over the years, I have owned many different copies, but the thing that always bothered me about them, was the grain in the film. Some purists will say that that’s the way the cinematographer intended the movie to look like, which is fine and good. However, I am not a cinematographer, and I’ve always wished that the movie was less grainy. I am not sure what they did with this version, but they solved that one nagging, and resolved issue. The movie looks absolutely amazing, in this new version, and I can’t wait to watch it over and over and over again.

While the "Most Popular" awards in Cameron's filmography undoubtedly go to Aliens and Terminator 2 (yes the Avatars and Titanic films may have made more money, but among his "Fans" Aliens and T2 are seen as more definitive) The Abyss may be his most Ambitions and most technically challenging film of his early era (yes Avatars and Titanic but again those two are a very different era in his film-making, and quite frankly less interesting). Narratively it is good solid Sci-Fi, with an underbaked final act, but the acting, cinematography, direction, and pacing are all above solid. The controversy on this new 4K release is that Cameron partnered with Peter Jackson's Park Road Post to apply AI technology to remaster the film for the new 4K digital master. True Lies, Titanic, Aliens, and this, all received this treatment. Apparently True Lies is a travesty, Aliens is a controversial transfer in the fanbase, and Titanic, I understand works fine. The Abyss transfer is, to my eyes, largely excellent. I saw the original and the Special Edition (both included) in 70MM Dolby THX on massive screens when they were released and this is as good an experience as those were (select the Special Edition). The one gripe/concern I'd make is that following industry trends (including, sadly, Ridley Scott) Cameron has chosen to push the "teal" range here. To be clear The Abyss has ALWAYS been a "Blue" movie (All Cameron from this era is), and prior Home Video releases have always been a bit too "purple". The issue is more noticeable in "stills" than in motion as the overall "blue" kinda overwhelms the teal, so ultimately it's minor, but still there. All things considered, an outstanding release of a LONG OVERDUE title.

I remember seeing this film in the cinema when it was released. I didn't expected much from the film, but it exceeded all my expectations. Then, I found out there was an extended version, a much better version, of The Abyss, and now it is released in crisp, clean Blu-Ray!

For those who are wondering what the film is about...get ready for a film that's high octane, with memorable characters, a great action-drama, several heart-stopping moments, and with a finale that's unforgettable. For me, the finale is one of my all-time favorites. I bought the Blu-Ray and had it shipped to UK; so glad I did! Well worth the shipping cost (much of which was discounted by Amazon; thanks, Amazon!).
