CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the W3C-approved method for enriching the visual presentation of web pages. CSS allows web pages to become more structural, and at the same time promises that they can have a more sophisticated look than ever before. With good implementations in Internet Explorer 5.0 and Opera 3.6, and 100% CSS1 support expected in Netscapes's Mozilla browser, signs are that CSS is rapidly becoming a useful, reliable, and powerful tool for web authors. The CSS Pocket Reference briefly introduces CSS and then lists all CSS1 properties, plus the CSS1 pseudo-elements and pseudo-classes. Since browser incompatibility is the biggest obstacle to CSS adoption, we've also included a comprehensive guide to how the browsers have implemented support for CSS1. For anyone who wants to correctly implement CSS, this is a handy condensed reference to all the details in the larger volume, Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide.

Wow. How did they present all that information in such a compact book? I found it really easy to read, understand, and use. It makes a lot of sense. I like the way it’s organized – it makes sense to me from a web document creation perspective. I would recommend this book – specifically the 2004 version, as it’s not bloated and gives a great view of CSS, and also because since it’s not new the browsers may have actually caught up to the CSS specs its based on … ha, ha. This book is best used as a reference for those who have used CSS and can produce results with it, but don’t have a comprehensive understanding about CSS and how it works. It would be best to read the beginning, read through the reference once, then pick it back up as needed.

Its like a very minimal review of CSS. If you are new to CSS then its a great start but theirs alot more to be explored. A good travel review book if your wanting to brush up quickly or quickly review certain regularly used terms in order to explain to a client. 91pages and half the book reviews what internet browser work with what CSS. Which their is alot of testing software out that do that for you. Well worth the price I guess. Thanks:)

Small, Informative, and easy to use. It does everything it needs to do.

I would very quickly buy this book again.

The majority of the book consists of an alphabetical guide to CSS properties. If you need to look up what a particular property does this would be quite useful. However, if you are trying to find a property to use and you do not know the name, this does not help. The book is entirely lacking any catagorical index to the CSS properties. Had CSS Pocket Reference 2nd Edition contained a two to four page index of the properties grouped by catagories such as text, layout, borders and so forth, I would have rated it better, but alas, it does not.

I used this book as a reference to take a certification exam without ever touching CSS and scored in the 96th percentile... enough said.

This book is useful primarily because of its handy size. You can take it anywhere - an internet café or a library, for example - where you might want to do some CSS and it provides a handy quick reference.

The early part of the book covers basic rules and there is an index at the back. In between, starting a third of the way down page 33 and ending on page 120, you'll find all the selectors with their pattern, a brief description and brief examples. The information is presented in a clear and easy-to-understand manner but you certainly couldn't use this as a training guide. You might spot one or two unfamiliar things that look as if they could be useful but you're not sure. In such cases, you might need to surf the net or look up a full-sized book to find out more.

As a quick reference guide, this pocket-sized guide is ideal, but don't expect any more of it than that. There are plenty of other CSS books, including some from the same publisher, that give much more extensive coverage. Those books can tell you a lot more but they won't fit in your pocket.

Note that since I bought this book, a revised third edition has been published.

A mistake so often made is judging a pocket reference guide in the same way you would judge a full size text. Pocket guides should only provide a quick reference for a technology you already know, and not be looked at as a learning tool. This reference is a boil-down of selected sections from the author's larger definitive title on Cascading Style Sheets, and there is no question that the information provided within is as informative and exact as is covered in the larger book; the light-weight pocket guide is much easier to carry when you need to verify something with CSS.

The guide is designed well, with a structured table of contents which breaks the styles up into logical groups, and even an index for those quick find needs. Each style entry provides the information needed without wasting space on the cautions and extras that a larger text typically provides.

If you already own "Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition" (ISBN: 0596005253) that this pocket guide companions, this is a good addition to the set. If not, obtain both as there are no better references.

I've used this pocket reference for a long time now and I love it. It's a great way to refresh your memory when you can't seem to remember a property and/or its value.

Although I must say that I refer to it much less now than I did when I first got it. Mostly because I know most of the properties and values by heart at this point and so I can use IDEs "IntelliSense" features.

Consequently, I must add that this is not a teaching aid. You will not learn how to style with CSS from this book! There are much better books on the topic! (For example: "Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design")

3.0 out of 5 stars Badly needs updating to CSS2

This is a verey useful reference that suffers badly from being limited to CSS1. An updated version to include all the additional features of CSS2 would be an essential companion to every web designer.
