Diversity and Inclusion Statement
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are central to the goals of the ACM SIGSOFT and all of its conferences. Equity at its heart is about removing barriers, biases, and obstacles that impede equal access and opportunity to succeed. Diversity is fundamentally about valuing human differences and recognizing diverse talents. Inclusion is the active engagement of Diversity and Equity.
To achieve the above goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion, ESEC/FSE 2023 aims for
-
Committee diversity—recruit qualified members of the organization committee, members of technical committees, and reviewers such that (1) the resulting populations are diverse with respect to gender, home institutions, geography, and research expertise; and (2) committees’ memberships vary from those in previous years.
-
Mitigate biases—promote double-anonymous reviewing, as a means to mitigate subconscious biases against national origin, gender, sexual orientation, and race.
-
Widen participation—provide virtual attendance options and mirrored sessions for at least one other time zone, to accommodate presenters and attendees who are unable to attend in person due to travel restrictions (if the pandemic continues), costs, or other constraints.
ESEC/FSE is organized under the aegis of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM promotes diversity and inclusion efforts throughout the organization. Diversity is achieved when the people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences are given a chance to voice their viewpoints (“the who”). Inclusion is achieved when the environment is characterized by behaviors that welcome and embrace diversity (“the how”).
