***

'Shroom and Gloom' was summoned into reality for the 2021 edition of 7 Day FPS as a part of the Free Lives expedition to Swellendam.

Our goal was to make an first person CCG that allowed for creative deck-building and mega-combos. We also thought it'd be fun to explore your combat deck being built through using a second collectible deck. So far we're just 16 days in and we've only been able to scratch the surface of the idea!

OUR PARTY WAS:

Evan "Shroom-Whisperer" Greenwood: Design, Code & Art

Ben "Roast-Master" Rausch: Design & Art

Jason "Jack and Slash" Sutherland: Music & Audio

HAEZER "Just plain HAEZER" HAEZER: Music & Audio

UPDATE: 2 weeks after we launched it, we've been totally overwhelmed by the positive response to this little prototype!

Thanks to everyone who picked the game up, played it, and shared their thoughts! We've loved hearing from every single one of you, and would be so stoked to keep the conversation going! We might make a dedicated Gloom and Shroom one in the future, but for now come hang out with us over on the Free Lives Discord! In there you'll find a Gloom and Shroom channel under the 'prototypes' section of the server. Swing by and say hi!

Thanks again for all the support, enthusiasm and encouragement!💖

Awesome and aethentic graphics and playtime! Thanks for the  atmosphere!

Totally our pleasure - thanks for playing!

Well done!  Found this to be really inspiring, trying to flesh out my own game jam game into a rogue like deckbuilder.  Wish you guys the best of luck!

Thanks! Did you check out the new version of Shroom and Gloom?
https://teamlazerbeam.itch.io/shroom-and-gloom

Yep!  It cool to see what you guys have been able to do so far.  I've made a couple of runs, all have ended with me getting stuck/bugs trapping me, been playing on a bit of a potato computer though. Beat the last form of the evolving mushing boss, but the game wouldn't let me play anymore cards at a certain point to defeat his minions.

Likely not your computer - the prototype is currently a bit of a potato game right now, and a lot of weird stuff does happens in the second half of it. Working on getting it more stable!

I have the feeling that if they drop it on steam they will make so much more than the 100 dollars fee, maybe later on, cus right now the new version is … not in the best state in term of bugs, but I'm sure they are working hard and I know that game developing is really hard, but if they can fix it its gonna be worth a 3A game. The game jam version Is great, I cant stop playing it, the feeling you get from doing a combo that kills the enemies perfectly is great. I cant wait for more content

Thanks so much for your comment! It really means a lot to hear people believe in this thing!

🔥🔥🔥

Thank you! Did you catch that we dropped new prototype?

Downloading right now, thks

Lovely! Enjoy!

I got training dummy and turned my scythe into a nuke

Haha! That sounds about right!

More awesome attacks that damage all enemies are on the way!

eu chorei

Eu honestamente acho que o homem que fez o design da almondega que protege os inimigos nn deveria ser permitido chegar perto de um jogo na vida dele

love the game btw

Thank you for playing!

(-3)

The first boss was monotonous and took an extremely long time to beat, since both of us were bullet sponges, then I quickly lost to the second boss because I made my deck more offensive. Also, it's "make a toasty mushroom", not "make toasty". What an annoying butchery of the English language.

(+1)

You are wrong, it's meant make *this mushroom* toasty, so "make toasty"

(-3)

If "toasty" is a noun (it's not, except in the context of this game), then the correct grammar would be "make a toasty", if "toasty" is an adjective (it's not, you are transforming a card into a toasty that's in your deck), then the correct grammar would be "toast". You stupid piece of shit.

(+2)

You're a literal buzz kill. Make *Blank* toasty. Eat a dick

As opposed to a figurative buzz kill? Dumbass.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/toasty#google_vignette

Toasty IS an adjective, meaning: "Comfortably and pleasantly warm". You could say "toast mushroom", and that would indeed be correct. But by that process, the mushroom is literally made toasty. So to say "make toasty", in reference to the mushroom, is absolutely valid.

Toasty is an adjective in the English language, but in the game toasty is a noun. So "make toasty" is like saying "make dog".

It can be a noun or an adjective depending on the context.

Toasty isn't 'only' a noun in this game, either... been to any cafes recently? The English language is adaptive.

very cool, would love to see this become a full game.

Thank you! We're busy working on a new prototype to explore turning this into a full game! Give us a follow on here if you'd like to be notified when we drop the new prototype!

This game is SO GOOD

Thank youuuuu!

Dungeon Meshi but only the walking mushrooms

Haha, yes!

I love the fact that as you pursue further into the "Place," your body starts to change, and over time you slowly start to become something deformed and less than human.

Glad to hear you appreciated that little detail!

I love this game so much. It's difficult, but in a good way.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback!

We're currently working on prototyping a more polished version of the game, so this kind of comment is so encouraging for us! Thank you!

This game was so fun, but so HARD. I'll have to try to beat it sometime

Thanks for sharing! Sorry you were having such a tough time in the tunnels! We'd be happy to offer some advice if you're still struggling, but it seemed like you were close to breaking past that first boss!

two spell shield is too tough to get pass! you only have 3 energy and very few 0 energy attacks ... that means you only get 3 attack per turn max, making it very hard to win against that enemy

Hi! Thanks for playing, and for passing along feedback.

You're not the first person to struggle with spell shields - a lot of players find them challenging. That said, you certainly can get through them and beat the game.

Some small bits of advice:
1) Target shield casters before they can shield their allies.
2) Never let a shield-caster escape - they will absolutely ruin your day when they return as veterans.
3) Applying a status to an enemy will remove a stack of spell shield
4) Multi-hit attacks are a great way to melt through shields fast

Hope that helps you out a bit. Good luck!

This was a very fun one.  Delightfully odd concept and well executed.  I've been enjoying this one quite a bit in my spare time.

So glad to hear you enjoyed the game! Thanks for playing, and making this video!

Is there a Linus version coming?

(+1)

Hoping so - we love Linus!

lol

There will be a steam release?

We're hoping that will happen! Just started an art test to explore how we could improve the graphics if we did a full release!

I love your concept, im checking this game from time to time for updates/release, I wish you luck with your project

Hi! Thank you so much for the encouragement, and for keeping an eye on Shroom and Gloom! We'll have some very exciting news to share soon!

Any chance there is a way to play this on a steam deck?

Hi there. Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately Shroom and Gloom is still just a jam game - it's not yet available on Steam.

Linux release coming??

Hi! No plans for Linux at the moment.

(1 edit)

The fact we still don't have an endless mode or any content updates for this makes me a little sad admittedly. A lot of the game's concepts like passive items existing as auto-triggered cards and a heavy emphasis on persistent effects are extremely fun. (even if they do lead to certain issues)

The game is a bit rough around the edges, having a somewhat rough and bumpy difficulty curve as well as minor balance issues (both in terms of archetype balance and individual card balance), but it is still very fun to play, and the apparent stagnation of it is... disappointing.

Are there any plans to release an official modding API for the game or any major updates? I would in particular love to see a wider variety of starting relics.

when release?

(+1)

Working on it.

I love this game and have beat   it multiple times! Best of luck on making a longer version, I'll go nuts when/if you release it!

Hi there! Thanks so much for the encouraging comment - it's really awesome to hear that people are excited for a full version of this game!

I. Love. it.

Thank. you.

I replayed this once again recently, I discovered a pretty bad bug though. I somehow was able to hit the lock twice while opening a door, and it ended up causing two rooms to spawn in at the same time. Both the background and the enemies were layered on top of each other. Made for a good challenge, but it crashed before I could finish the fight. I think I caused an event flag to happen twice and the game just rolled with it.

Oh wow, that's a wild bug! Thanks for the heads up!

We need to drop an update to the game here - we have soooo much new stuff in the game, and I believe this bug is also resolved in the current game on our side. Thank you again for sharing though!

Please this needs to be full lenght game, highly underrated , destined for lots more

Thank youuuu!

Amazing and great and epic game , lovely cartoonish graphics , so balanced and challenging levels , i love it so much , i wish that there is a longer version of it  10/10 👍👍✌️✌️✌️

Aww, what a lovely comment! Thank you so much for playing! There's more in the works!

Great news , i'm looking forward to see it 👍👍 ...
thats my gameplay if you don't mind 🙏

I’m fucking loving it! How could I play it in a handheld device with a controller?

It was very usable with a controller mapped on a desktop PC, but I would love to play on the go now. Any emulator or any ideas? I don’t have a steam deck or anything that can run computer games…

Hi! Thanks for the encouraging message!

Not super clear on your question about running the game on a handheld device, but the game currently only runs on Windows and Mac OS.

i would so love another version of this!! ive almost totally optimized the game and can win with 25-30 health lol

(+2)

Hi hi! Thanks for being such a dedicated shroomer! Very impressive to be able to beat the Megashroom with so little health!

We're still a ways off from sharing it publicly, but have been testing out a massive update with the Free Lives Discord community. If you join the server, you can find the latest build linked in the Shroom and Gloom channel, under "PROTOTYPES".

If you do check it out, please let us know what you think of all the new cards and play styles!

https://discord.com/invite/freelives

Thanks again for playing!

(1 edit)

A very cool game with interesting things. I wish that new things would come soon

Thanks for playing!

This was so fun! Challenging, but in a way that made me want to keep playing until I had beaten it. I love the art style and the concept as well!

Great to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to let us know what you thought of the game so far!

Guess I grinded too hard

Rot 182! Nice!

just letting you know, when you open the chest in the beginning you can still go forward and backwards and if you go forwards you can leave the map. Why is the video so glitchy! Sorry. Anyways great game for only 16 days!

Hi! Thanks for playing, and for the positive feedback.

Thanks as well for letting us know about the chest bug - it's been fixed in the update we're working on!

When will the next update be I cant wait anymore???

Awww, thanks so much for checking in - really great to hear that people are excited for more shrooms!

Unfortunately the update won't be coming anytime soon. Our main projects (Wrestling With Emotions and Stick It To The Stickman) are keeping us very busy, but we're thinking of Shroom and Gloom all the time and looking forward to wrapping up the update when we have the time. We have soooo much good stuff on the cards (heaps of new cards and enemies, and totally new ways to beat the shrooms) so hope that it'll all be well worth the wait!

Thanks again for your enthusiasm and support!

This game is so much fun and so good! I got halfway through before dying but I love every second playing your game! Loved the art style and the card mechanic! Will definitely play again! Great Job!

Hi! Thanks so much for playing and sharing! Glad to hear you had such a good time with the game!

Good luck on your future runs!

PS: To grab a game-changing card at the start of the game, be sure to check out the chest in the first room!

This game is so fun! "Left to rot" is so busted and fun to use. It one-shots the final boss if you stall the earlier bosses to eat loads of toasty cards with sacrifice cards. I used Wormwood to get about 450% bonus damage.

Thanks so much for taking the time to pass on this encouraging feedback - it's great to hear.

That combo sounds really brutal! High fives on roasting some shroom butts!
