We are excited to announce the public preview of Premium SSD v2 for Azure Database for PostgreSQL - Flexible Server. This cutting-edge technology offers the most advanced general-purpose block storage solution with unparalleled price-performance. Premium SSD v2 delivers sub-millisecond disk latencies, making it the ideal choice for demanding IO-intensive workloads at an incredibly low cost.

With Premium SSD v2, you can significantly enhance the price-performance ratio of a wide range of enterprise production workloads, including Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server, SQL Server, Oracle, MariaDB, SAP, Cassandra, MongoDB, big data, and analytics applications.

Key Features of Premium SSD v2:

Flexible Disk Size: Premium SSD v2 allows you to specify a disk size ranging from 1 GiB up to a whopping 64 TiBs, with 1-GiB increments. Imagine having the freedom to provision exactly the storage capacity and performance your application demands!

High Performance: On a single disk, you can provision up to 80,000 IOPS and 1,200 MBPS throughput. Consider a scenario where a large Flexible Server database utilizes a single data disk to provide all the necessary storage capacity and performance. Premium SSD v2 empowers you to handle intensive workloads seamlessly.

Granular Performance Management: Premium SSD v2 provides unparalleled flexibility for managing both performance and cost in your production environment. You can provision granular disk sizes, IOPS, and throughput based on your workload requirements. Plus, you can dynamically scale up or down the performance as needed without any downtime, ensuring cost-effective management aligned with your application needs.

Baseline Performance: Each Premium SSD v2 disk comes with a baseline performance of 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/sec, regardless of the size provisioned. This means you only pay for the GiB of the disk, maximizing the value of your investment. Premium SSD v2 makes a big difference and offers substantial improvements in IOPS and latency, especially for transactional workloads (OLTP).These enhancements make a significant difference in performance, allowing your applications to operate more efficiently and responsively.

Flexible Server IO limits (Premium SSD v2 vs Premium SSD)

With the launch of Premium SSD v2, Flexible Server now offers the most comprehensive set of disk offerings for every general-purpose workload.

How to Deploy Flexible Server with Premium SSD v2.

  1. In the Azure portal, when you create a flexible server, from the Compute + storage section click Configure Server.
  2. Go to the Storage section, select Storage type, and choose Premium SSD v2.
  3. Provide your desired disk size for Storage size (in GiB).
  4. Select your IOPS as per your workload requirements. By default, 3000 IOPS are included free of cost for all premium SSD v2 disks.
  5. Provide your Throughput details. By default, 125Mib/Sec throughput is included free of cost for all premium SSD v2 disks.
  6. Click Save.

Billing

Premium SSD v2 disks are billed hourly based on the provisioned capacity, IOPS, and MBPS. Let us take an example of a disk that you provision with 200 GiB capacity, 7,000 IOPS, and 250 MBPS throughput.

  • Premium SSD v2 is  billed per GiB of the provisioned capacity. Hence, you will be charged for 200 GiB of the provisioned capacity.
  • The disk is billed for any additional IOPS provisioned over the free baseline of 3,000 IOPS. In this case, since you provisioned 7,000 IOPS, you will be billed for the additional 4,000 IOPS.
  • The disk is billed for any additional throughput over the free baseline throughput of 125 MBPS. In this case, since you provisioned 250 MBPS throughput, you will be billed for an additional 125 MBPS throughput.
