Dev channel update to 80.0.361.5 is live
Hi josh_bodner
Thanks for the update, I had a question about the stable channel version.
is it going to be version 79? because Google chrome stable Ver 79 was released few days ago and if Microsoft release their first Ver 79 in January 15 that will mean that Microsoft Edge browser will always stay behind Google chrome in terms of features, development and everything (about 1 month behind). is that correct?
I really hope Microsoft aim for Ver 80 to be the first stable release version...

HotCakeX yes, we're planning on our first Stable being 79 since, when we officially announced the GA date, we called Beta 79 our release candidate. Don't worry about the timing though, we just didn't want to push it out and then leave it unattended over the holidays!

But still Edge browser will be almost 1 version behind Chrome browser, always.
when 79 GA will be released in January 15, Google will release version 80 stable a couple of days after that.

HotCakeX Well, Edge is based on Chromium code, so they inevitably will always be behind the official Chrome version.

No. The fact that Edge is now built on a Chromium-based platform does not mean it follows in the shadow of Chrome. They are 2 distinct & different browsers that happen to be constructed on similar foundations. But, they are quite separate & individual buildings serving different communities in their own ways.

that would only be true if Microsoft forked Chromium source.
Microsoft has more engineers, more developers and programmers. so if a smaller company like Brave could do that, it is necessary for Microsoft to do the same and maintain their control and authority over their own browser.

True but only few days.
currently, Edge dev and canary channels are only few days behind google chrome dev and canary channels.
but for the stable channel, Microsoft is intentionally postponing and delaying the release to stay behind the google chrome's development.
Microsoft's Edge version 79 will be released in January 15 2020 while Google chrome version 79 WAS released in December 10th 2019.

Has Microsoft stated the date yet for when Edge Beta will move to v80? Since they are releasing Edge Stable at v79 on 1/15/20, and since Edge Beta is currently the "release candidate" for Edge Stable, I'm guessing that maybe Edge Beta will move to v80 on 1/15/20? Just a guess, hoping for the official word if anyone has heard. Thanks!
