Thanks Job Expiry Is there a setting in Universal Print to set expiry of jobs if not released after a certain amount of time? e.g. if not released within five days (or whatever is the desired time period) it is deleted from the queue? We are currently testing Universal Print with one of our photocopiers, but I can't find any option for this. Thanks Windows 11 24H2 - Copilot Removal We don't want Copilot on our machines and up until now have removed it using a custom OMA-URI setting (./User/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/WindowsAI/TurnOffWindowsCopilot), deployed using Intune. This doesn't appear to work with 24H2 - presumablyt because Copilot is now an app rather than a part of Windows. Can anyone suggest a reliable way to remove it through Intune? Thanks Faulty patches on Server 2022 There appear to be two faulty patches in this month's batch for Server 2022: 1) KB5034439 - which won't install at all on a large number of machines (hasn't installed on anything I've tried it on), and the only suggested 'solution' appears to be the completely impractcal one of manually resizing the recovery partition on all affected machines - this also affects the equivalent W10 patch (KB5034441) and is discussed here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-update-error-code-0x80070643/2c1718c3-e563-4d4a-9800-6d823bf49050 2) KB5034129 which in some cases appears to be completely break Edge. Not all machines are affected and I've not managed to work out what determines which ones will be, but the symptoms are (some of us do use a server OS for desktop use, hence the references to Teams / Outlook!): When Edge is opened it just gives a blank white (or occasionally black) screen New Teams fails to load (presumably due to Edge dependency) New Outlook Fails to load (presumably due to Edge dependency) Old Outlook (subscription version, fully patched) works as normal, but has a constantly flickering circle beside the mouse pointer – this persists while Outlook is running even if it doesn’t have the focus, and the only way to stop it is to close Outlook (does old Outlook link into Edge in any way)? I have tested this second one by removing it manually - problem went away. Reinstalled it - problem came back. Removed it again - problem went away. I'm therefore confident that this KB is resonsible. Is Microsoft aware of these problems and is anyone looking at them? I know that Microsoft staff do read these forums. New Teams on terminal servers We have Teams installed on our terminal servers (Windows Server 2022) as well as locally. The video and voice functions aren't usable on the terminal servers, but everything else works (most notably the Outlook addin). I've been letting users decided whether to try the new Teams. I've been using it locally for months and not recently had any issues. It initially seemed OK on the terminal servers too. I decided to set it as the default in the Teams admin centre recently, and in setting up a couple of new user profiles on a terminal server the problems have started to come to light. Specifically: 1) Teams doesn't want to update - it displays a restart and update icon on the menu, but this doesn't actually cause it to update. Even logging in as an admin and using right-click run as administrator doesn't make any difference. The standalone installer uses an msix package, which doesn't work on WIndows Server (I am aware that there are ways to get it to run these packages, but it shouldn't be necessary and I'd rather avoid it for now if I can) 2) The Outlook addin doesn't work (as in doesn't appear in Outlook). I've looked for Microsoft documentation, and all I can find is this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/new-teams-vdi-requirements-deploy Which doesn't seen to specifically refer to local terminal servers at all! Assuming that much of what applies to AVD will also apply, I've checked the registry settings it lists and they all appear correct. Today I have created a new test VM, Server 2022, terminal server role, and installed Office using the normal XML config file method (using the latest available .exe for this). Office installed, and as expected only included the new Teams, not the old one. Still doesn't work properly - even after a clean install Teams wasn't up to date and the update now button didn't work. Manually closing and opening Teams caused it to update in this case (that doesn't work with the live terminal servers), but it's unclear whether this is going to continue to work reliably, or why it won't update on the live servers. The Oulook addin doesn't appear at all, although the settings and registry entries as listed in the link above all appear correct. Anyone got any ideas? The lack of mention in the documentation suggrsts that - as usual - Microsoft isn't making any effort to accommodate those using on-prem session hosts. Thanks Removing public folder in Exchange Online I am trying to get rid of a public folder from Exchange Online. It's existed for years (started on-prem before we migrated) and is a simple folder which mail items get moved into. Thought it would just be a case of deleting it from the public folders, which I did. It's gone from the public folder list in Outlook and Exchange Online (checked via the GUI and using Powershell). Checked the on-prem server too for good measure (this is now just used for management) - no sign of it in any of them. But Outlook favourites to it (desktop Outlook, subscription version), which a lot of users have, still give access to it, and it's clearly still live as if one user copies something into it, others can see that - i.e. it's not just a stale local cache. This has been the case for a number of weeks now. Doesn't seem to appear in OWA. I have a long-running support case with Microsoft support and they are proving about as helpful as normal (i.e. not very). Latest suggestion is create a new Outlook profile. Not sure how this is supposed to help - it's clear that it still exists on the server side, so whether or not a particular client can see it isn't really relevant. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks Windows versions on Xeon CPUs We have a couple of machines with the oddball 'Windows for Workstations' version. This is proving such a nuisance to deal with for various reasons (and we don't need the additional functionality it offers) that I am looking at whether it would be possible to buy a couple of normal W11 Pro retail licenses for them. The machines have Xeon processors, and I believe that it's a Microsoft stipulation that OEMs have to supply this version of windows on client devices with Xeon processors. But does the same apply to retail versions - i.e. do the terms stipulate that the ordinary Windows Pro cannot be used on Xeon machines? I've tried to find detailed licensing terms for the various versions of Windows and all I can find is this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/UseTerms/Retail/Windows/11/UseTerms_Retail_Windows_11_English.htm Which makes no mention of CPU types at all. Anyone able to clarify? Thanks Printer deployment via GPO I am trying to deploy a printer to some Windows 11 hybrid-joined devices. These are all desktops and I want to deploy the main printer for that office to them all. The printer is managed by a print server. I've been testing the GPOs. I can create a per-user one which does exactly that, but I want it to be a per-device policy (i.e. apply to everyone who logs into these computers when they are using them, but not if they log in at another site). The per-device policy doesn't allow adding of shared printers - and I don't want to address it directly by IP as the defaults are set up how I want them on the print server. Any suggestions? Or can this simply not be done? Thanks Windows 11 for Workstations installation media Is it possible to obtain a clean generic installer for Windows 11 for Workstations? We have a couple of machines with OEM licenses for it and I want to reinstall them. The standard USB installer created with the Microsoft media creator tool doesn't appear to include that version. I don't want to use the manufacturer's recovery media creation tool as I always avoid their customised Windows installs - had many problems over the years so prefer to just do a completely clean install using the generic Microsoft installer, then add the necessary drivers after installation. Thanks Removing Copilot taskbar icon via Intune I am trying to remove the Copilot tasbar icon from W11 23H2 using Intune. I found this suggested method: https://hudson.tel/post/how-to-disable-new-copilot-preview-button-with-intune/ But it doesn't work, and further investigation in the test machine's registry shows that the registry entry ShowCopilotButton doesn't appear to exist (and if created manually it has no effect, whether set to 0 or 1). Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks
