Consider a world ridden by devils. They swarm to the scene of murder or torture, and ravage whom they find. One can be safe from devils only by buying from the devils a hidden sign of blessing or of banishment. The price of that sign is an horrific secret act. One who does such a thing can be safe to do or be around similar things. Yet one who bears a hidden sign, and kills another who bears such a hidden sign, will be rent asunder as the two signs war upon each other in the killer's body.

Thus: those without signs restrain themselves from evil for fear of the devils. Those who have done evil to gain their signs restrain themselves from further evil for the fear of harming another who bears a sign.
