Pool of Radiance. The original and still the best! Fully turn-based combat, minimal story, interesting areas to explore. The main (only?) negative is the crude UI.
Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures. It's the Gold Box engine, but you can download many modules to play in it, many of which are adaptations of original D&D print modules, among other things.

jepsen1977: Temple of Elemental Evil is VERY faithful to the source material and pretty hardcore - especially with the Circle of Eight mod.
I agree about TOEE because it very faithfully renders the 3.5 ruleset, which I kike. I also dig the crafting.

The original Gold Box games really hooked me, and I loved them to death back in the day.
Temple of Elemental Evil for me, it feels like playing an actual P&P module and pulling out the miniatures. It really feels like playing D&D even if it does use inferior 3.5 edition rules.

After that all of the Gold Box games for the same reasons as above, it's just they're so much older and more clunky with their UI and so on which makes them more of a drag to play.

Baldurs Gate series may be fine video games, but for me they don't invoke the feeling of actually playing Dungeons and Dragons.

I actually think the D&D games are pretty overrated. I vastly prefer the old Fallouts, Arcanum, blobbers like Lands of Lore and early 3D stuff like Morrowind. That said I guess my fave would be Planescape Torment, as it had the best story and exploration, which are usually my focuses.

I think Icewind Dale has the best implementation of D&D of all the Infinity Engine games. Haven't played any other kind of RPG other than Infinity Engine ones (well, I did play non-d&d ones...).
The problem with the Bioware/Black Isle games is that their reputation has been tarnished of late.

After Beamdog's "improvements", people have hardened their hearts and urged people to avoid the game by way of negative ratings.

At least GOG allows you to play the originals, but not withint charging more for the priviledge.
