Listed at the bottom of the 12-movie pile that makes up Christopher Nolan’s entire official filmography, Tenet is either the worst or the most brilliant creation born from the director’s imagination. With beautiful cinematography and a mind-warping plot to keep the audience hooked, the pandemic-era film remains one of the most puzzling concepts built for the silver screens to date.

With both the signature Nolan elements – time and non-linear continuity – forming the premise of the movie, Tenet could have easily been the magnum opus of Christopher Nolan’s career. The film is effectively a thesis of Nolan’s filmography, assembling within this single movie all the unique concepts that make the director’s work so revered in modern pop culture.
Yet, Tenet remains the lowest-rated movie of his career.

There's no rest for the wicked — or for Laika Studios, either, it would seem. With the Oregon based outfit preparing to release long-gestating fantasy stop-motion epic Wildwood next year, their self-described "hardest" film to date, the studio could've been forgiven for taking some time out for a bit of a breather. But with recent months bringing news of live-action Brian Duffield movie Crumble and a Piranesi adaptation from Laika CEO and Kubo & The Two Strings director Travis Knight joining the studio's slate, things have been all systems go over in Portland. And now another project has found its way into the Laika pipeline — a live-action sci-fi thriller from Jon Spaihts, best known as the co-writer of Denis Villeneuve's Dune and Alien prequel Prometheus.
Plot details regarding Spaihts' movie, which will mark the prolific screenwriter's directorial debut, are being kept largely under wraps for now. However, the enigmatic logline for...

One of the best things about the mind-bending world of Christopher Nolan is that his films can always guarantee a joyride through time and space. The uniquely strange imagination of the filmmaker has given us masterpieces like Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet. But all of it originally began with Memento.
Memento [Credit: Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment]
Conceived during a car ride with his equally talented brother, Jonathan Nolan, the story for Memento was devised by the younger of the duo and then translated into a screenplay for a film. In 1999, Christopher Nolan directed Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano in the leading roles. The movie, which came out a year later, forever altered our brain chemistry.

Christopher Nolan was born with an innate ability to make the ground slide from underneath our feet with the kinds of theatrical movie experiences he delivers on the big screens.

Few people know the highs and lows of fandom experience quite like fans of "The X-Files." One of the hottest shows of the '90s was also one of the messiest, featuring retconned central mythology, a sizzling will-they-won't-they relationship that culminated mostly in vaguely implied hookups, and way too many Mulder-less latter season episodes. The show also features a surprisingly complicated release order, with two movies, a revival series, and one spinoffs.
When "The X-Files" fans reminisce about the show, they typically seem to be talking about the seven seasons that ran between 1993 and 2000, when David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully were on the hunt for aliens, monsters, and cigarette-smoking men week after week. But while it might be easier to cordon off the "simpler times" section of the show and call it canon, the fact remains that the official "X-Files" story doesn't end...

Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling opens with a metatextual flourish that would make Quentin Tarantino proud. The opening crawl sets the scene using the bright-red lettering and creepy, monotone narration of an old-school video nasty. It lets us know that we’re about to witness the last known movements of a prolific American serial killer. Then a title card appears, informing us that Strange Darling will be “a thriller in six chapters,” and we’re thrown into the middle of a furious car chase between a shotgun-toting man (Kyle Gallner) driving a pickup truck and a bloodied young woman (Willa Fitzgerald) in a bright red Ford Pinto. And then another title card arrives, revealing that this sequence is actually the third of those six chapters.
This sort of winking, self-aware opening feels like Strange Darling calling its shot. It’s letting us know, right away, that it thinks it’s pretty sly.

Image Source: Amazon Long before Oppenheimer or Inception or even the Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan was a filmmaker defined by his quirky screenplays and exacting standards as a director. To the people he worked with early on, though, they could see the seeds of a spectacular career being planted. Guy Pearce starred in Nolan’s second film, 2000’s Memento, and he told us he has wonderful memories of making the movie, from the first time he read the script to the point where he saw the final product on the big screen. Christopher Nolan is a walking refutation of the idea that we're all becoming troglodytes with attention spans the exact length of an Instagram reel. In 2023, the man put out a three-hour epic chronicling the life of the inventor of the atom bomb and we all lapped it up, propelling the box office take for "Oppenheimer" to almost a billion dollars. What's more, the British director has a penchant for writing mind-bending and complex screenplays to the extent that even veterans like Guy Pearce and Leonardo DiCaprio are confused by Nolan's scripts. He also confounded mass audiences, including Quentin Tarantino apparently, with "Tenet" back in 2020 — a feat he'd accomplished to much greater effect 10 years prior with "Inception."
In other words, in a world where we're all supposedly becoming less thoughtful and less able to focus than ever before, Christopher Nolan should not be as successful as he is. Yet, here he...

Christopher Nolan Once Blamed Harvey Weinstein For Compromising Oscars Integrity. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Long before taking home the coveted Academy Award for Best Director for Oppenheimer, Nolan slammed the ceremony and blamed Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive 1999 Oscar campaign for compromising its integrity. Nolan believed Oscar compromised their core values and succumbed to the disgraced Miramax producer’s marketing campaign.
Christopher Nolan was first nominated for the Oscars in 1999 for the Original Screenplay of Memento, which he lost to Gosford Park. He was again nominated for Best Director for 2016 Dunkirk and again lost to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water. After a string of losses, despite making blockbuster films, Christopher Nolan finally won the Academy Award for Best Director for his WWII biopic Oppenheimer.
However, given Nolan’s past derision toward the award ceremony, we have to assume the award mattered less to the filmmaker. In a 2020 book, Nolan Variations,...

A film student trapped by Syrian government troops in the besieged city of Homs tries to find his way out in Sulaiman Tadmory and Ali Hakim’s “700 Days in Homs.”
The project is currently under development at Germany’s Hakim + König Film, with Hakim headed to Match Me!, Locarno’s prestigious networking platform for emerging producers taking place between August 9-11.
Produced with Epikfilm, “700 Days in Homs” is inspired by Tadmory’s real-life struggle for survival in a war-torn city. “I’ve lived through the relentless terror of bombings in Homs, where fear and destruction were omnipresent,” he said in a statement. “‘700 Days in Homs’ captures the profound resilience and solidarity of young residents amidst the chaos, shifting the narrative from despair to hope. Acclaimed director David O. Russell has developed a reputation for alienating most of the actors in his movies. The director who once got into a fistfight with George Clooney on the set of “Three Kings” once also put Christopher Nolan in a headlock after Jude Law dropped out of Russell’s film I Heart Huckabees for a role offered by Christopher Nolan.
David O. Russell’s 2004 existential comedy I Heart Huckabees featured Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin as a pair of “existential detectives” hired by various clients to explore the purpose of their pointless lives. The actors included Jude Law, among others.
Pre-production for the film was derailed after several cast members who were tapped to star in it dropped out. According to the New York Times, Gwyneth Paltrow was the first to drop out, followed by Jude Law.

Image Source: Amazon Before Oppenheimer, Inception and the Dark Knight trilogy, a young Christopher Nolan first made his mark in Hollywood with a fascinating film called Memento. Released by an indie studio, it became a surprise arthouse hit; over the years, as Nolan’s profile has risen, Memento has evolved into a cult classic. The film stars Guy Pearce as a man who, after the attack that killed his wife, left him struggling with a form of amnesia; the movie’s plot features Pearce’s character, bereft of any short-term memories, trying to piece together the details of the attack. At the time the film was being cast, Pearce had won some acclaim for his early films, but he was far from a household name. And that, Nolan once told us, made him a very attractive choice for the role. (Click on the media bar below to hear Christopher Nolan) https://www.

“I feel like I’m at the adult table at Thanksgiving when I’m supposed to still be at the kids’ table,” announces Francesca Sloane, moments into THR‘s TV Producer Roundtable. “It’s surreal.”
The Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner may have the shortest résumé among her peers gathered at the Fairmont Century Plaza for the live event, but she is by no means out of place. That became crystal clear when the conversation turned to show envy. “I was envious watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” says The Crown creator Peter Morgan. “Dealing with repressed British people for so long, I was peering over the fence thinking, ‘Look how much fun they’re having!’ “
That was not the end of the love fest. Ripley writer-director Steven Zaillian picked Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country, and vice versa. “In Mexico, there’s bad envy and good envy,” explains López.

After the two-fold delay involving the pandemic and the following WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Prime Video’s The Boys, among numerous other shows, has severely lagged at marketing its future plans to the public. As productions slowly get back on track, updates regarding the fates of some of the industry’s most prized shows are also being revealed accordingly.

The recently released trailer for “The Convert,” starring Guy Pearce, has captured the attention of cinema enthusiasts and historical drama fans alike. Directed by renowned filmmaker Lee Tamahori, the film promises to be a compelling journey into the turbulent times of early 19th century New Zealand.
A Tale of Transformation and Conflict
“The Convert” is set in the early 1830s, a period marked by cultural upheaval and the clash between indigenous Maori traditions and European colonial influences. The story revolves around Thomas Munro, portrayed by Guy Pearce, a deeply troubled former soldier who seeks redemption by becoming a Christian missionary. Munro’s quest for salvation leads him to New Zealand, where he encounters a world vastly different from his own.
As the trailer unfolds, viewers are introduced to the stark beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, juxtaposed with the brutal realities of colonial expansion. Munro’s journey is fraught with moral dilemmas and violent confrontations,...

The "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" franchises share an interesting history. In 1999, there was only one movie that truly mattered for geeks, and that was George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace." Everything else was an appetizer for the long-awaited return of the series that captured the imagination of a generation.
"The Matrix," which opened two months before the first "Star Wars" film in 16 years, wound up outshining "The Phantom Menace," and, though it did not outgross Lucas' film, it generated more buzz and speculation about how the Wachowskis would explore this expansive universe in future installments.
Though Keanu Reeves' Neo was the savior protagonist, the character that first grabbed our attention was Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity. She's the star of the film's dynamic opening scene, in which she defies gravity and runs up walls while taking out a quartet of cops with astonishing ease. Welcome to "The Matrix,...

Spoilers ahead for "Coherence."
There are movies often cited as being confusing or mind-melting, like "Inception" or "Memento," which really aren't that complicated. Then there's something like "Primer," which requires detailed diagrams and hours-long YouTube explainers to begin to unravel its web of twists and turns. Sitting happily in the middle is James Ward Byrkit's "Coherence," one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade and a movie that is complex and mild-melting yet not so complex that it's hard to follow.
The film begins with an alluring premise of four couples meeting at a friend's house for dinner on the night a comet is passing by the Earth. While they all have messy relationships to navigate, the comet causes quantum decoherence, creating split realities and allowing the guests' alternate selves to intrude into their reality, and vice-versa. It's a concept that allows for plenty of twists while also allowing for simplicity,...

And yes, it should be considered somewhat “popular” since it spawned three sequels. If you haven’t seen the original Mirror Mirror, don’t worry because Dark Force Entertainment, headed by Demon Dave, has released it in 4K Uhd. That means you Og fans of this B-movie classic can relive some sense of nostalgia from that decade, now in 4K clarity.
Let’s dive into the film’s plot. Megan Gordon and her mother Susan move to L.A. and into a new home to begin their equally new lives. The previous residents left behind a lot of their belongings that are being sold by an auctioneer named Emelin.

Over the years, Christopher Nolan has gained a reputation for his storytelling. Regardless of era, gender, personality, or region, one can always count on him to perfectly represent the depths of human emotion, tied in with some scientific phenomenon. On top of these, he has depended on both real life and fiction to draw inspiration for his masterpieces.

Can you believe it has been over two whole decades since we first encountered the perplexing tale of Leonard (Guy Pearce), the compelling Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), and the intricate structural puzzle that is Christopher Nolan’s groundbreaking film, Memento?
This masterpiece, a hallmark of neo-noir storytelling, isn’t just memorable for its narrative acrobatics; it marks the auspicious second film debut of Nolan in the major league of filmmakers. Just as Leonard used tattoos to etch pivotal clues onto his skin, Memento indelibly inked itself into our cultural consciousness.

When "Memento" arrived in 2000, it was a big deal. This small indie film that cost $9 million to make became a big hit, spurned on by strong word of mouth that kept talking up the movie's narrative trick: it moved backwards. Rather than tell a straightforward story, Christopher Nolan's mystery-thriller runs in reverse, with each new scene giving us insight into a scene we just watched. Little by little, we piece together the mystery, just like the film's main character, played by Guy Pearce.
If you need a refresher, here's the gist: Pearce's character, Leonard "Lenny" Shelby, has anterograde amnesia — he's unable to retain new memories. The condition arose when he was injured during an attack that resulted in his wife's murder. Now, Lenny uses clues he pieces together in order to find (and kill) the man who murdered his wife. But of course, nothing is quite as it seems,...

The Acolyte: Carrie-Anne Moss Talks Jedi Master Indara, Star Wars Spirituality, And Lightsaber Duels
Imagine if Trinity from The Matrix had Force powers. That, effectively, was the genesis for Jedi Master Indara in The Acolyte – a character who, according to series creator Leslye Headland, is the best of the best, and able to pull gravity-defying tricks out of the bag in the middle of combat. Hence, the obvious choice was to cast Trinity herself, Carrie-Anne Moss. As it turned out, Moss would have much to learn from entering the Star Wars galaxy too.
Empire sat down with Moss to get to know Master Indara – discussing Jedi spirituality, the importance of nailing a lightsaber fight, the thematic connections between Star Wars and The Matrix, and how difficult it is to fight in a Jedi robe.

Few filmmakers can boast a filmography like Christopher Nolan. The legendary director has risen to all-time-great since his arrival in the ‘90s, moving from cerebral indie fare like Memento and Following, to none-more-ambitious brain-twisting blockbusters like Inception and the Oscar-dominating Oppenheimer. Factor in one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all time with the Dark Knight movies, bold originals like Interstellar and Tenet, and instant-classic thrillers like The Prestige and Dunkirk, and you have a body of work for the ages. And as the director tells Empire, none of it worked out quite how he expected.
For Empire's Christopher Nolan Special Collector’s Edition, we sat down with Nolan – and his producing partner and wife Emma Thomas – for a major new career-spanning interview, looking back on everything they’ve achieved. For such a meticulous filmmaker, it’ll be no surprise that Nolan always had a plan. “As a young man,...

Imagine if “Baby Driver” was a tragic, music-free exploration of mental decay, and you might be able to start picturing the tensest robbery sequence in “Gazer.” Just like Ansel Elgort’s tinnitus-inflicted getaway driver, Frankie (Ariella Mastroianni) needs to put her headphones in before she tackles a dangerous job. But she’s not blasting Queen or The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
The struggling single mother suffers from dyschronometria, a deteriorating mental condition that leaves her unable to accurately perceive the passage of time. Seconds and minutes seamlessly turn into hours and days in a way that leaves her constantly questioning when she is. It’s a workable, if inconvenient, situation when your biggest fear is missing a doctor’s appointment or zoning out at work. But when you have a matter of minutes to steal car keys from a dangerous man’s apartment before he comes home, the risks become considerably greater.

Iconic directors named David haven’t been having the best luck with the Netflix streaming service lately. David Lynch recently revealed that Snootworld, an animated movie he hopes to make, had been rejected by Netflix, and now David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which just made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (you can read some of the first reactions Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode.
During a press conference at Cannes, Cronenberg said (according to The Hollywood Reporter) that he “envisioned the story working well as a series. Filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan are known for pushing the boundaries in blockbuster filmmaking as they bring in original ideas and mount them on a large scale. While the directors have grown to be critical favorites, they also seem to have won the box office race with their original films.
Among these legends, Christopher Nolan seems to have gained the top spot in one category. With four of his original films grossing over $500 million at the box office, Nolan beat Spielberg and Roland Emmerich to gain the top spot. The Oscar-winner is the only filmmaker to have achieved this feat with movies that are not comic adaptations, reboots, or sequels.

Legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future released in 2022, eight years after Maps to The Stars. Thankfully, we're not going to have to wait nearly as long for the body horror maestro's next film, which is set to premiere during this year's Cannes Film Festival next week.
Titled The Shrouds, the movie stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Guy Pearce (Memento) and Sandrine Holt (Fear the Walking Dead).
The first teaser trailer is now online.
The footage doesn't give us very much to go on, basically just serving as an introduction to Vincent Cassel's Karsh, "an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. Long before he confused the heck out of all of us with "Tenet," Christopher Nolan was producing scripts so perplexing that even veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Guy Pearce didn't understand them. Tom Hardy has admitted to taking a leap on the script for "Inception," which he claimed was a "bit complicated," and Nolan even confused himself by including a famous line in "The Dark Knight" that he didn't understand.

Rather than dispose of any complex filmmaking techniques for this film, however, Nolan refused to dumb things down,...

In 2002, Christopher Nolan directed a film set in a small town in Alaska where the sun doesn’t go down for days at a time. The film starred the great Al Pacino as a once again decorated but tortured Detective at full Heat level intensity, squaring off against the legendary Robin Williams in an against-type role as a creepy, cerebral murderer of a teenage girl. And somehow……some way…..it’s considered underrated. Christopher Nolan. Al Pacino. Robin Williams. Underrated. These are not words that go together. So, let’s talk about just Wtf Happened to Insomnia.

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was one of the director’s more cerebral works, one that required some level of innovation when it came to the stuntwork. Nolan has been known to make films that routinely push the envelope in one manner or another, delivering a film that has a lot of heart with well-executed scenes, whether it be drama, action, tragedy, or comedy.
Robert Pattinson and John David Washington in Tenet
One of the most innovative scenes that were in Tenet was the reverse fight scene John David Washington participated. While it could have been the case that the director shot the scene the right way forward and then reversed it for the film, Nolan actually wanted the backward fight scene to be choreographed, which Washington revealed, was quite the challenge for the stunt workers, who had been in the film industry for quite some time.

Legendary The Fly and Dead Ringers director David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future released in 2022, eight years after his previous film, Maps to the Stars. Thankfully, we're not going to have to wait quite as long for the body horror maestro's next project.
Titled The Shrouds, the movie stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Guy Pearce (Memento) and Sandrine Holt (Fear the Walking Dead), and is set for its world premiere later this month at the Cannes Film Festival.
Plot details had been pretty vague up until now, but the following synopsis gives us a much better idea of what to expect.
"Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time.
