After an incredible 7+ year journey, our CEO Dave Fabianski has announced his retirement from Apex. Under Dave’s leadership, Apex more than tripled in scale and has become a national leader in environmental consulting and engineering, expanded its services in water, and developed a world class staff and culture. We are grateful for Dave’s authentic leadership, unwavering people-first focus, and for establishing Apex as one of the highest performing firms in our industry. While Dave will certainly be missed, we are excited he will remain connected to Apex as a member of our Board of Directors. We are also excited to welcome Shawn Doherty as our new CEO on November 4. https://hubs.ly/Q02WBzcz0 #ApexCompanies

During fuel line repairs at a gas station in Colorado, a perforation was discovered in an unleaded gasoline line. Apex was hired to characterize and remediate the release. Given the remote location and depth to groundwater approximately 80 feet below ground, we used high resolution site characterization (HRSC). A membrane interface probe and hydraulic profiling tool (MiHpt) was used to identify the source area and extent of impacts. The data was used to aid in placement of monitoring wells to characterize the source and define the extent of impacts. During installation of the monitoring wells, Apex discovered gasoline fuel floating on the groundwater in multiple groundwater monitoring wells. The aquifer contaminated was also used for drinking water. To address the contamination, we installed a network of pilot test wells, conducted a pilot test, and mobilized our solar soil vapor extraction (SVE) unit to the site while a full-scale system was designed. The solar SVE unit removed 877 pounds of total volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (TVPH). Due to the distribution of impacts and heterogeneity of the subsurface soils, a multilevel air sparge (AS) and SVE system was designed and implemented. The full-scale system removed approximately 5,000 pounds of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) and 17,000 pounds of TVPH over the course of six years. Initially, twelve wells contained contamination; now, only one well contains impacts. The site met its cleanup goals a year ahead of schedule and is on track for closure in 2025. #ApexCompanies #Groundwater Melanie McAllister Bjorn Helgeson

Apex, as prime consultant, in collaboration with a team of engineers and contractors, is overseeing the construction of one of the largest deep injection wells in Florida for the City of Fort Myers. The City will utilize the 3000-foot-deep well to dispose of up to 40-million gallons a day of treated wastewater effluent, which is currently being discharged to a local river. Apex, in collaboration with Hy-Vee, Inc., recently completed the construction of a 560-foot-long bioswale at the new Hy-Vee Distribution Center in Cumming, Iowa. The goal of the bioswale is to concentrate and treat stormwater runoff from the facility’s parking lot. Bioswales are channels with an engineered subgrade, amended soil and a subsurface drain, designed to convey stormwater runoff while removing any debris. This particular bioswale was seeded with native Iowa grasses and flowers to aid in water absorption and to provide a habitat for local pollinators. Apex, along with our friends at Hy-Vee, are proud of this green infrastructure project and look forward to future collaborations! #ApexCompanies #Hy-Vee #Bioswale #GreenInfrastructure David Hruby Zach DeYoung Hy-Vee, Inc.
