🌍 Meet our #TeamLocalEurope! With the names of the new European Commissioners still to be presented this week, cities are already one step ahead. Led by Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig and President of Eurocities, mayors and deputy mayors from across Europe successfully formed a gender-balanced body to act as direct counterparts to the incoming European Commission College. 📢 As Burkhard Jung emphasises: “The issues we face – from the rise of populism to climate change and refugee integration – require EU-level solutions implemented locally. The Eurocities Shadow Commission will make sure our voices are heard, and together, we will build a more inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic Europe.” #Ifmayorsruledtheworld

🌆 One in four actions under the Cities Mission is mobility-related underscoring just how critical mobility is to achieving climate neutrality. “We are not closing the streets to cars. We are actually opening them up and giving them back to citizens,” said Mar Jiménez in today’s Mission Cities Spotlight at #CF2024. With the support of CIVITAS Initiative, these cities are experimentation and innovation hubs today and set the example for cities tomorrow. #100climateneutralcities2030 #climateneutrality #mobility

🚲🚶🏼♀️ Cities point to walking and cycling as key priorities in the next mandate during today’s Politicians Exchange Forum between local politicians and the European Commission at #CF2024. 🚗 “Mobility represents 13% of GHG emissions in the city, but they are the hardest to reduce since it affects people's daily life,” says Anna Lisa Boni, Deputy Mayor of Comune di Bologna. 🌱 As cities increasingly commit to climate neutrality, major behavioural changes will be needed. Deputy Mayor for Mobility Lot Van Hooijdonk breaks down Gemeente Utrecht's approach to urban mobility: “Proximity is our main driver when it comes to urban mobility. We promote walking first, then cycling.” 📈 To spur this change, cities are calling for increased investments in sustainable urban mobility.

Missed the Eurocities Culture Forum 2024 in Belfast? Here’s what you didn’t catch! 👀 We celebrated 50 cities committing to greener, more inclusive cultural policies by signing the Eurocities Lille Call to Action – with Gijon, Munich, and Uppsala as new signatories! ✨ “By signing this Call, we take another step towards making Uppsala a global leader in sustainability,” said Linda Eskilsson, Deputy Mayor in Uppsala. “Signing this commitment today in Belfast is showing that Gijon works in alignment with the European objectives of sustainability and inclusive development,” said Montserrat Lopez Moro, Councillor for Culture, Youth and Museums in Gijon. “I am proud to be standing here, with you all, working together on sustainability and inclusion in the culture sector,” said Marion Lüttig, Munich City Councillor. These cities are boldly placing culture at the heart of their sustainability and inclusive goals. 🌱 💚 “I encourage all cities to sign it. This is a resource to bring forward your other strategies,” said Stephan Hoffmann from the signatory City of Dresden. Sign the Call 👉 https://shorturl.at/JS11G As Councillor Sammy Douglas, Belfast City Council High Sheriff, put it: “Culture can impact where politicians can’t.” Belfast showcased its exciting culture strategy and the activities developed under Belfast 2024 year of culture - where people, place, and planet come together to drive long-term transformation through culture. This celebration of cultural heritage, creativity, and community will revitalise the city and inspire future generations. “What has been done here is a lesson for all,” commented Nicole Yardeni, Deputy Mayor in charge of Music in Toulouse and Vice-Chair of the Eurocities Culture Forum. Read about Belfast’s year of culture 👉 https://shorturl.at/4NEH2 Belfast was the perfect place to host a forum titled: “Culture as the Connector”. It’s a city where “everyone says good morning and makes connections,” noted Dejan Crnek, Deputy mayor at the City of Ljubljana and Chair of the Eurocities Culture Forum. In line with the theme, cities were inspired by the keynote, presenting the concept of ‘care-full’ cities, where human connection and creativity are woven into urban planning. Read the full keynote 👉 https://shorturl.at/Yr1rt Throughout the programme cities showcased and exchanged their experiences on how culture strengthens community ties, boosts local economies, and promotes greener living. Read all examples 👉 https://shorturl.at/sCDPL As the forum wraps up, it’s clear that the role of culture in local and European policy is more critical than ever. “We recognise the vital importance of investing in culture even in difficult times,” said Damien Martin, Belfast City Council Strategic Director of Development. “Cities that prioritise culture create transformation.” Find all pictures here: https://lnkd.in/epJCeKSb
