A not for profit organisation responsible for the collection and treatment of electrical waste and waste batteries.

About us

The European Recycling Platform (ERP), is a compliance scheme set up to ensure cost-effective implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the Waste Battery Directive through innovative waste management strategies for the benefit of participating member companies, their customers and the environment. ERP Ireland was established in 2005 as a result of the success and expansion of ERP across Europe. In 2017, we collected an average in the order of 9.6Kg of electronic waste per person in Ireland. The target for household portable battery collections as per the Regulations was 45%. ERP exceeded this target with a collection rate of 51%. This marks an impressive achievement and reflects the remarkable shift in the public’s attitude towards recycling.

ICYMI: Battery Regulation: new obligations in force Since 18 February 2024, the European Battery Regulation 2023/1542 now applies in all Member States. While it will only repeal the Battery Directive 2006/66/EC with effect from 18 August 2025, the first requirements and obligations of the new regulation came into force on 18 August 2024. The newly applicable requirements include: 🔋 CE conformity and battery labelling 🔋 Batteries must now undergo a CE conformity assessment procedure before being placed on the market. It is not sufficient to ‘re-label’ batteries that have already been produced with the CE marking or to add the Battery Regulation to an existing CE declaration. 🔋 In addition to the CE marking, batteries must bear new labelling that includes the address of the manufacturer and importer, as well as a batch and serial number. 🔋 In addition, all batteries must be accompanied by instructions for use with safety information. 🔋 Substance restriction on lead -The limit of 0.01% on lead means that portable batteries containing lead are de facto banned from the market. 🔋 Battery storage and management systems -New safety requirements apply to stationary battery storage systems, which must be verified as part of CE conformity. -Battery management systems must store and make readable data on the ageing status and expected service life of stationary battery storage systems and traction batteries for light and electric vehicles. 🔋 Rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2kW and traction batteries for light and electric vehicles must also contain information on performance and service life.

The transition from a linear to a circular economy will remain one of the key topics at European level over the next five years. This is according to the political guidelines for the new legislative period presented by the outgoing and incoming President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, shortly before her re-election on 18 July. Even though political priorities seem to be shifting towards strengthening resilience and economic prosperity, the circular economy remains an important part of the solution. The circular economy allows materials to be reused, reducing the need to import raw materials, thereby decreasing geopolitical dependencies. Von der Leyen wants to introduce a new Circular Economy Act to boost demand for secondary raw materials and create a single market for waste, especially for critical raw materials. In addition, von der Leyen announced a Clean Industrial Act for her first 100 days in office to help decarbonise and re-industrialise the EU economy. European Union #circulareconomy

Did you know small electrical items do not go into recycling or general waste bins? Despite the general improvements in the collection of electrical waste in Ireland, there is evidence from the EPA’s latest Waste Characterisation Report that substantial amounts are still present in household bins. These accounted for 0.8% of waste in the domestic bin (6,179t) and 0.4% of waste in the recycling bin (1,115t). Let's continue to build on good habits. There are more electronic and smart devices than there are humans on earth, with many sitting idle in drawers that are neither trash nor treasure. Many devices contain rare and valuable components that can be recycled and reused in new products reducing the extraction of raw materials which has harmful environmental and social effects. ERP Ireland is delighted to support Fingal County Council's Climate Action Week 2024. The programme aims to inspire, share knowledge and highlight best practice on climate action, as we work towards creating a healthier, more sustainable future. Don’t waste a Day! – Support your local Climate Action Week and gather up your old, broken and unused electrical items – anything with a plug cable or battery and recycle them at your local electrical retailer or recycling centre.

The decision by Cabinet yesterday to ban the sale, manufacture or import of single-use or disposable vapes in Ireland will bring about environmental benefits as well as health benefits. Research commissioned by ERP Ireland and conducted by Coyne Research amongst 1,000 adults aged 18+ years in February of this year, revealed that one in three adults in Ireland are unaware of where to dispose of vapes. Some key findings include: ⚠️ 1 in 3 adults claim to be unaware of where they can dispose of unused/unwanted vapes – rising to 48% amongst Baby Boomers. ⚠️ 1 in 5 would dispose of unused/unwanted vapes in the recycling bin. ⚠️ 1 in 3 current vapers believe that unused/unwanted vapes can be disposed of within the refuse waste bin. Vaping products contain electronic components and lithium-ion batteries and require safe disposal when they become waste. When damaged, short-circuited or overheated, these batteries can catch fire and present a risk to the health and safety of waste collection workers and others. Vapes also contain a complex mixture of critical raw materials such as cobalt, nickel and manganese, which can be re-used. Dispose of vapes correctly by bringing them to any retail outlet that sells vapes when purchasing a new one or disposing of them in the WEEE/Battery area at Civic Amenity Sites. ERP Ireland also offers free recycling of these devices through its battery collection network. Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications

Disposable vapes have become incredibly popular worldwide, with reports suggesting that approximately five million disposable vapes are discarded each week in the UK alone and that only 17% of these are properly recycled. ERP Ireland research revealed that one in three adults in Ireland are unaware of where to dispose of vapes. According to a recent article on RTE, based on UK use alone, we are throwing out 260 million small batteries from single use vapes after only one use. That’s the equivalent of throwing away 37.6 million iPhone batteries after a single use. This is a staggering level of waste. To learn more find link to the full article in the comments below.

Green Claims Directive: Council Calls for Changes Earlier this Summer the Council of the European Union adopted its general approach on the Green Claims Directive. The directive aims to address greenwashing and help consumers to make “greener” purchasing decisions.   The proposed changes require companies to use clear criteria and the latest scientific evidence to substantiate environmental claims and labels. In addition, the general approach specifies that claims and labels should be easy to understand, with specific reference to the environmental characteristic claimed, such as durability, recyclability or biodiversity. This should further enhance consumers’ ability to make environmentally responsible choices.   In addition, the general approach maintains the proposed verification of claims and labels. This means that an independent third party must verify any green claim before it is published. In certain cases, a simplified procedure may circumvent this process and reduce the administrative burden for companies. The general approach foresees that the Commission will define the characteristics of this simplified procedure via an implementing act.   Trilogue negotiations are expected in this new legislative term.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland recently launched its Circular Economy Programme Annual Report for 2023. The EPA-led Circular Economy Programme is a key enabler to support the Government’s policy ambitions in relation to circular economy implementation.   The report reveals a record 72,000 tonnes of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) were collected in 2021. This was increase of 10% overall.   In a circular economy, the aim is to minimise the consumption of new and virgin materials and increase reuse and the use of secondary or recycled materials.   WEEE has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide due to an unprecedented level of electronics being produced. With 84% of Irish households hoarding an average of 15 to 20 broken or unused electrical items in their home, there has never been a better time to declutter while positively impacting on the environment and supporting a more circular economy.   You can recycle your e-waste at your local electrical retailer or at your local recycling centre.   For more see link in the comments below.
