By fostering inclusive decision-making processes and engaging diverse community groups, ASCEND aims to ensure that sustainability efforts are equitable and representative of all citizens. This project emphasises participatory governance, transparency, and community-led initiatives to drive effective climate action. 🌟 Ville de Paris is leading the way with its 'NEAR' project, which focuses on building strong, inclusive governance frameworks. By integrating input from marginalized communities and promoting collaboration between citizens, businesses, and government entities, NEAR is working to create a cohesive approach to urban sustainability. Today is #WorldCitiesDay ️ 🏙🌍 💡 Did you know that 93% of greenhouse gas emissions are beyond the direct control of local governments? While cities are at the forefront of climate efforts, tackling these emissions requires collaboration across all sectors. How ❓ By engaging all stakeholders - businesses, but also citizens, academia, and researchers - in the journey towards climate neutrality. 📣Mission City Padova, Italy, is seeking expertise to develop a food and circular economy study! ♻️The city of Padova is looking for experts to hep developing a plan to reduce food waste. The city wants to develop a wider knowledge of its food system, to improve decision making of the municipality, and inform discussions with local stakeholders. 🔎This is about establishing a solid basis for food strategy, in terms of baseline data, policy and intervention opportunities. 💡Inspiration and motivation are the themes of the week! The committed partners from the NetZeroCitiesEU Consortium gathered in Ville de Lyon, fuelled by the shared vision and unwavering dedication to deliver the best support to cities on their journeys to climate neutrality! From insightful plenary sessions and inspiring site visits in Lyon to challenge workshops and innovative brainstorming, this Consortium meeting was full of positivity, enlightenment, and an even greater sense of motivation to strive forwards towards our common goals. Key takeaways: ✅ Impressive progress in the EU Cities Mission has been made over the last three years with 53 #MissionCities receiving the EU Mission Label in recognition of their strong climate plans, 104 cities participating in the #PilotCities Programme and 56 in the Twinning Learning Programme  Philippe Froissard, Head of Unit, Strategy, Policy Coordination & Urban Transitions, European Commission, provided an encouraging outlook as we l kicked off the meeting, highlighting our shift from planning to acceleration of climate actions! ✅ From engaging in key learnings from Climate City Contracts, discussing policy innovations in practice, and workshopping the importance of partnerships in supporting cities, these two days were filled with insight, grafting, and learning. In-depth discussions addressed collaboration with National Platforms across Europe, solutions to overcome policy barriers at the national and EU levels, the urgent need for cities to attract private investment, and much more. ✅ A panel session featuring representatives from City of Lyon and LYON CONFLUENCE, including Sylvain Godinot, 2nd Deputy Mayor of Ecological Transition & Heritage, Ville de Lyon, Julie PURDUE, Head of Ecological Transition, Ville de Lyon, and Samuel LINZAU Director General at LYON CONFLUENCE, offered insights into urban challenges and successes. The discussion showcased initiatives like the Lyon 2030 Agora, which engages citizens in climate activities, and the Lyon Confluence neighbourhood, a model for sustainable development. 🎉 Today, the selected 20 #MissionCities formally received their EU Mission Labels at the European Parliament in Strasbourg by Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, European Commission! These 20 cities Aachen, Münster (Germany), Trikala (Greece), Miskolc (Hungary), Eilat (Israel), Bologna, Bergamo, Milan, Prato, Turin (Italy), Liepāja (Latvia), The Hague (the Netherlands), Porto (Portugal), Bucharest 2nd District, Suceava (Romania), Ljubljana, Kranj (Slovenia), Gothenburg, Gävle, Umeå (Sweden) will now have access to the Climate City Capital Hub, an international finance resource set up in June 2024, focusing on the engagement with private capital. Cities also qualify for a lending envelope of €2 billion, put in place by the European Investment Bank (EIB). 🏙️ 53 Mission Cities have been awarded the EU Mission Label as recognition by the European Commission of their climate strategies to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, these bold steps pave the way for other cities to follow suit for a sustainable future. Here is what some have to say: Markus Lewe, Mayor of the City of Stadt Münster, Germany, said: “The Mission label is a huge honour for all people in Münster. With our climate protection strategy and our joint measures, both large and small, we are on the right track to achieving climate neutrality, and we would like to celebrate this together. The label is our incentive not to slacken in our efforts, but to continue consistently on our path to climate neutrality.” The City of Kranj, Slovenia, said:  “Receiving the EU Mission Label is a significant achievement for Kranj, as it represents recognition of a well-prepared, clear, and comprehensive action plan for climate neutrality. “It not only validates Kranj’s vision for a sustainable future but also serves as a critical milestone that opens up opportunities for public and private funding, helping to turn these plans into actionable projects. 💚 #TwinCities accelerate their decarbonisation through the Cities Mission Twinning Learning Programme! Stadt Köln and AYUNTAMIENTO DE SORIA have been paired with the Spanish #PilotCities Activity: URBANEW (Multi-stakeholder Innovative & Systemic Solutions for Urban Regeneration Spain), to learn, exchange, and implement an Action Plan on urban regeneration.
