Luminescent solar concentrators enhance solar energy capture by using luminescent materials to convert and concentrate sunlight onto #photovoltaic cells. Unlike traditional concentrators that rely on mirrors and lenses, these can harvest diffuse light. New research demonstrates bio-inspired leaf-like designs that may offer a promising solution for more scalable and effective solar energy systems. And just like that, we have reached the final profile of the 2024 #SPIE #WomenInOptics notebook! On this #WiOWednesday, meet Zhexin Zhao, current postdoctoral researcher at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and former AR/VR research scientist at Meta. Her PhD research on dielectric laser accelerators opened new avenues in nanophotonics and electron dynamics, and she is currently working in the interdisciplinary area of free-electrons and nanophotonics. At Meta, she focused on the photonic design of waveguide combiners for near-eye displays. Zhao shares, "The biggest obstacle I have faced is lack of confidence. It took me a long time to overcome this obstacle, and it is a life-long journey to keep cultivating and solidifying my self-confidence. It’s important to care for your mental as well as physical health, to step outside your comfort zone, and to continue to build your knowledge and competence." For those in STEM, her message is to stay enthusiastic and persistent. Embrace the journey, and keep shining in your field. Read her complete profile here: https://lnkd.in/grKkp3XE
