#OTD On this day in 1966 the U.S. Navy's most decorated enlisted Sailor in history, Chief Petty Officer James E. Williams, earned his Medal of Honor. In Vietnam, Williams was assigned to the River Patrol Force whose mission was to intercept enemy arms shipments on the waterways. On Oct. 31, 1966, Williams and the Sailors he commanded fought against overwhelming forces, and after a three hour battle emerged victorious, destroying more than 50 vessels, and disrupting a major Viet Cong logistical operation. On May 14, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson presented Williams with the Medal of Honor for his heroism. Today, the guided missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) proudly bears his name. #MedalOfHonor #USNavy
