Canada is one of the highest per capita carbon emitters and has set an ambitious goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. It is well known that reaching net-zero requires drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Canada is also planning to incorporate the emerging technology of permanently storing remaining emissions. Stephanie Rose Cortinovis (MES, 2023) identified the structures and policies needed to create an ideal environment to support DACCS development and implementation. Using Canada as a case study, Cortinovis then analyzed national climate policies to determine where they met or fell short of this ideal scenario. This national-level policy analysis was the first to be undertaken for scaling DACCS and is published in Frontiers in Climate. University of Waterloo researchers have developed a smart fabric with these remarkable capabilities. The fabric has the potential for energy harvesting, health monitoring, and movement tracking applications. The new fabric team can convert body heat and solar energy into electricity, potentially enabling continuous operation with no need for an external power source. Dr. Francisco Gonzalez, a professor in the University of Waterloo Faculty of Arts, brings a nuanced perspective to this enduring problem. From Uganda to Germany, Samantha Kremer's co-op journey has spanned continents and pushed the boundaries of scientific research. Originally from Alberta, Kremer chose the University of Waterloo for its unparalleled co-op program, which integrates substantial practical experience with academic learning. Working as an eco-acoustics and land use research intern at her last co-op position at Albert Ludwigs Universität Freiburg, Kremer leveraged AI to monitor biodiversity in grassland ecosystems through the sounds of grasshoppers and crickets. "It's like a Shazam for grasshoppers," she explains. Her work helps develop an AI model to quickly interpret sound data as biodiversity indicators, confronting the challenges of varying land-use intensities. A new University of Waterloo startup is helping credit card users maximize their rewards and savings. Velocity based company Eclipse uses machine learning to choose the best credit card for every transaction. “When we turned 18, we were looking into opening our first credit card, but we realized that there’s so many options. There’s so much information that's difficult to digest," says Eclipse co-founder Mingchung Xia. Well, there's now an app for that. 📱 Researchers from the University of Waterloo have created Mindful Scroll, a mobile app that helps users transition from doom-scrolling to adding mindfulness into their daily routines. Within the app, users fill in endlessly scrolling patterns of geometric shapes using predetermined, soothing colour palettes.
