For more than 30 years the Big Health Insurance companies have done a great job of keeping us distract with network "discounts" while manipulating what these really cost us. For years they've made us beleive higher discounts are the answer. But, as the article states, "The truth is that discounts don't tell the whole story." The Big Health Insurnace carriers have used the legal tactis like "confidentiality" and "proprietary information" to shield the underbelly of health care costs and pricing. However, with federal rules and regulations requiring transparency and prohibiting "gag" clauses, their shield is starting to weaken. While the current system is deeply entrenched, "that doesn't mean employers are powerless; they can benefit from the macro trends already at work in health care, namely the momentum around cost and pricing transparency." IF you want to do something to fight back against the deception, as the article states, "seek the help of a trusted advisor who understands the challenges and can work through the "noise" to reach a level playing field in their analysis. Make sure the consultants work for you and are not biased by payment arrangements with the administrator directly." A good advisor will educate you on the market, your options, understand your risk tolerance, and dislode ALL of their compensation upfront. And maybe even put part of their compensation at risk to prove they believe in their recommendations. Now that's putting your money where your mouth is.
