Ross School of Business has teamed up with Arctos Sports Partners to launch the pioneering Sports Franchise Index (SFI). This innovative initiative promises to transform how we understand the performance and valuation of sports franchises. 🔍 What is the SFI? The Sports Franchise Index offers a comprehensive and transparent measure of the financial and operational health of sports franchises. New Jersey, United States: Recognising a growing interest in golf-related careers, the United States Golf Association (USGA) is helping funnel emerging talent to a broad range of job opportunities that exist in the game. In total, the USGA supported 323 interns in 2024 – a number that is nearly equal to that of the USGA’s current full-time workforce – reflecting the organisation’s focus on career development to foster a stronger, more welcoming game. As part of that commitment, the USGA directed recruiting efforts toward reaching individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and communities. These efforts resulted in a 59 per cent increase in applicants from historically under-represented backgrounds across the PJ Boatwright Jr Internship Programme from 2023 to 2024 and a 12 per cent increase in women participating in USGA internships. This year’s pool of interns represents a broad spectrum of disciplines – including students majoring in science and technology, data analytics, research, education and non-profit management. The interns were then matched with USGA core service and programme teams that leveraged the interns’ knowledge while also providing a platform for progress and growth. “It’s important that we don’t think of these young people simply as interns, but rather the future leaders of our game,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan. “The proof is in the numbers – we are providing more opportunities and in turn, seeing higher percentages of USGA interns working full-time across the golf industry.” Of note, 201 individuals are completing PJ Boatwright Internships this year across the USGA’s network of 57 Allied Golf Associations (AGAs) – a record-high for the programme focused on providing interns with paid, on-the-job training in golf administration. In 2024, the USGA provided US$2.1 million in grants to AGAs – a portion of which came from philanthropic contributions – to support wages, travel costs and AGA operational support. The Boatwright programme began in 1991 and has had a large impact. Across AGAs, 33 per cent of executive directors and 38 per cent of all AGA staff members are former Boatwrights. Upon completion of the programme, interns will join a network of more than 3,300 alumni working across sports and beyond who launched their careers as Boatwrights. As golf evolves, so too do the roles and functions of interns. In 2024, a number of interns are immersed in specialised areas focused on sustainability and inclusion initiatives, including supporting adaptive golf programmes, turfgrass research and management through the USGA

With the National Basketball Association (NBA) leading at a staggering 𝟰𝟵𝟵% increase and even the Major League Soccer showing a 𝟯𝟯𝟲% jump, these figures reflect the increasing monetization of sports franchises through 1️⃣ Media Rights Deals 2️⃣ Sponsorships 3️⃣ Global Market Expansion. This surge in value has attracted 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝-𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨 and billionaires to the sports ownership arena, driving up purchase prices and making team ownership an increasingly exclusive club. As team values continue to soar, leagues are likely to explore 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒖𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔, potentially leading to more international games, technological innovations in fan engagement, and possibly even new franchises in untapped markets. The success of these established leagues provides a blueprint for future sports ventures. New leagues might focus on 1️⃣ Underserved Markets 2️⃣ Innovative Game Formats 3️⃣ Sports with Growing Global Appeal.

The debate continues - should women's sports carve out its own path, or leverage the legacy framework and partnerships of their male counterparts? There's no better example of this predicament then the fact that WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) has the majority of its rights wrapped in with the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s next major rights tenders, and is seeing incredible momentum in interest in the sport and league fresh off the drafting of the next big star Caitlin Clark. NBA's commissioner say it is categorically the right approach - others would disagree, and would suggest that the WNBA should be allowed more flexibility in their approach to monetising rights in a new era of sports media consumption. FOSTER THE BEST PLAYING ENVIRONMENTS Youth Soccer Leagues are the biggest scam in the youth soccer ecosystem by far. How is it that a minimum of 40% of the revenues generated from the leagues go out of the game into individuals or companies pockets because: they have convinced unknowlegable soccer clubs that leagues are hard to run🤷♂️ The 8-12 year old leagues, are not even leagues (standings-champions-relegation) but merely “GAMES PROGRAMS” and yet clubs allow parents to pay way over the top for a very basic service. Due to NO OVERSIGHT of clubs/coaches, who create chaos on what is a simple process (number of teams-venues-refs) that fuels the need to charge a higher price to parents for a perceived complex program🤷♂️ And can someone explain what “sanctioning a league” exactly entails🤷♂️ US Soccer needs to take control of the game by operating ALL LEAGUES AND GAMES PROGRAMS UNDER ONE DEPARTMENT! Then and only then, will they be able to control their goal of “fostering the best playing environments” Right now the parents get fleeced, players get screwed, clubs have nothing to strive for and the game stagnates. My final question is: Can/should a league be run as a 501c? If so, should any individual take 40% of the total revenue in that scenario? What is a fair rate for running a league for 8-12 year olds? Who and what amount should be paid to the facility providers under this model? Genuine questions as it’s something we are faced with. Thoughts and views welcome 🤗
