How often do you come across an entry level IT position only to look at the desired skills and experience seem very much like they expect someone to have been in that role before? Entry-Level but we want 3 to 5 years of experience troubleshooting in an enterprise environment, along with a BSci Comp Sci, a CompTIA A+, Net+, and Sec+ and some unrelated skill specific to that Help Desk or Computer Tech role like Agile frameworks... I can tell you first hand, it's unrealistic. Most people trying to get their foot in the door to a career in IT are either still students, just graduated, or have a background in computers but not professionally. So then your resume which you send in never gets looked at because someone set the highest standards for a role that is often very easily trained and learned as you work. A shame really. And it happens all the time. Companies pass up candidates with no degree but multiple certs, pass up candidates who are very savvy and fast learners because they have no previous experience, and those companies lose in the long run because those people they passed up won't remain the same candidates they were the day that resume got turned in. That MSP that interviewed me twice and passed me up is now looking for someone with Cloud knowledge and experience... Guess what I've spent the last 3 years studying... yep Azure, AWS, and Virtualization. I think it starts with redefining expectations for entry level and then scaling it. But I'm no recruiter or HR generalist. I'm just a guy studying Cloud Computing who wants to become a Solutions Architect.
