- A 2020 study in Nature Communications indicated that most of us go about our days having 6,000 thoughts floating through our minds. But how many times are you taking a step back and simply observing your thoughts? Meaning how often are you assessing your own thinking process? When we're able to achieve meta-awareness, meaning our capacity to observe our own thoughts, we're able to briefly detach from thought spirals, which is especially important if those thought loops are sending you into deeper distress. But if we don't master this practice, it is likely that our thoughts would lead us into unending loops. For example, if Jessie has just finished giving a presentation, she may notice that her heart rate is accelerated and realize she's thinking things like Mary is looking at me like she's disappointed.
