- Now before we go, I'd like to offer us one final activity to wrap up with. You see, when we experience trauma triggers, it can be helpful to have a cop ahead plan. This is an actual plan for what you'll do to help yourself feel better should you get triggered. If you have traumatic responses surface from any incident you've experienced, chances are that triggers will come up. So having a plan in place can help you release the emotional upsurge of that trigger with greater ease. I find that it helps to write down what you'll do if triggered and what you'll do moments after if you're still feeling that lingering effect of that trigger. In case you need a reminder of some of these things to keep in your back pocket, you can try deep breathing, taking a walk, progressive muscle relaxation, writing down your thoughts, humming, rocking, or taking a short break from the situation.
