Recognize the four different types of trigger responses

- Let's get into triggers in greater depth. A trigger is the awakening of a painful memory of the past through something in your present environment. Triggers can be driven by internal emotional signals, for example, feeling sadness or experiencing shame, and by external sensory signals, for example, the sight of an accident or a loud noise. Either of these cues can unlock past memories that still live in you and cause your body to tense up. When that happens, it's usually because your nervous system thinks you might be back in danger. It's remembering the previous threat and preparing you to survive it once again, and that preparation can ignite one of four trigger responses, fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Remember the window of tolerance we learned about in the previous movie? It reflects that emotional space where you're able to feel more comfort and safety.
