- The emergence of Artificial Intelligence or AI as a significant tool and enhancement to organizational capability has major positive and risk implications for both data management and data governance. It can seem that AI appeared from nowhere. In truth AI has been an area of research and development since the 1950s. It's only now that we've reached the nexus of computing performance, storage, big data, networking, and sophisticated algorithms that AI has entered the mainstream in a big way. Before I discuss the role of AI in data governance, let's establish a definition. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior. I like this one. Simulating human activities by a machine is at the heart of AI capability today.
