LinkedIn: Normalize opting for roles that give you peace of mind. And normalize walking away from those that zap your well-being. Yes, various reasons can bind you to a toxic job. But let's be honest: You won't perform outstandingly if you're always overworked. You may be stuck in the toxic system (for now.) Because of your financial obligations and the terms of employment. However, never doubt that a company out there will value your well-being and encourage you to thrive. You just need to tap #JobSearch strategies from those with similar experience. I have been unhappy in my role for the last several months. I'm routinely undervalued, overworked, and continue to have things piled onto my plate all the while being told I don't have the experience or the knowledge for more money or a new title. I'm currently seeking something entirely different, and wanting more work-life balance. It's encouraging to know I'm not alone in this long, stressful journey. I've applied for roughly 100 jobs and had no interviews, if I'm lucky I receive a denial email.

I would first say we need to normalise pushing back on overwork and setting boundaries before quitting. In my line of work this is one of the core things we do. People realise that they are contributing to the overwork by not saying anything. That often happens before they don't want to be seen as weak for taking rest, etc. So that's the belief that needs to be examined. If you've already done that, then sure, don't tolerate a bad boss or company who is constantly pushing for you to work when you need rest.

Aligning your job with your values is important for all kinds of jobs, but it has particular importance for lawyers, whose job is to represent clients they may or may not agree with. Some lawyers find jobs where they do agree with their clients, whether it's in issue-advocacy organizations, government agencies, or law firms focused on representing particular kinds of clients whom the particular lawyers find sympatico. Other lawyers pursue jobs representing clients they don't always agree with. In that case, it's important for the lawyer to be comfortable that the clients' right to high-quality legal representation overrides the lawyers' personal disagreement with the clients' positions. If you're comfortable that it does, that too can be a laudable career choice.
