LinkedIn: Thousands of jobs are filled through networking. But networking can be intimidating, especially if you don't have a network to start with. Here are 5 tips for overcoming networking anxiety. 1) Practice introducing yourself and your career goals in front of a mirror or with a friend. I call this the "elevator pitch" - Who are you? - What is your background? - Why should people care? 2) Attend networking events with a friend or colleague for support and accountability. You could go alone to a networking event, whether virtually or in-person, but many prefer to go with a friend, especially if it's your first time. Attend these events with a friend or 2, and write notes on what you both learned during the process. Then, you can engage in friendly competition to see who is able to connect with the most people on Linkedn/ email! 3) Ask open-ended questions and listen actively to show genuine interest in the other person. Before networking, you can create a document with questions you want to ask the professional to show you're prepared. Here are some of my favorite open-ended questions: - Tell me more about your story from (X company/ background) to where you are today at (Y company/ background). - From my research, your role consists of (XYZ). What do you believe are the most important skills someone should have to land a role like yours? - What advice would you have for someone who comes from a similar background as mine to land an opportunity at your company. 4) Join online communities and groups related to your industry to network virtually. You can join ones that are based on your industry by going on Google search → searching "(Field) (Slack/Discord) Group". You can also join FREE broadcast such as mine located on instagram (JonathanWordsofWisdom). 5) Focus on building relationships and providing value, rather than solely asking for job opportunities. This is MAJOR KEY. Many think that networking is a one-way street, when it's not. Ask the other person you're networking with "how can I help you?" The worst thing that can happen? Your progress seems super tiny, but the best? You integrate new habits, and attain your starting goal without disrupting your daily activities. So, what small habits do I recommend for better networking, for instance? 💡Start with you: start by listing the ways you can add value to others when you network with. If nothing comes to mind, write down 50 things you've done well since you can remember. 💡Start from home: Connect with people with a shared interest, eg; local area, sports clubs, hometown, college, or those with similar hobbies. Start with common interests until you discover how to truly help them. Do the following: 💡Search the company's name on platforms that encourage employees to swap stories and review employers. Eg; Glassdoor, Indeed, Fairygodboss.  💡Explore the stories and ask clarifying questions on work-life balance, team work, and the professional development spirit.  💡Search the company on LinkedIn and connect with 2-3 people who previously worked in the company. Ask the same questions and compare their responses. 💡When you finally land an interview, remember to ask your interviewer pertinent questions. LinkedIn: I’m revamping people’s resumes from random LinkedIn posts for FREE without anyone asking… I came across Patrick Walker’s post on how he shared his resume and is seeking feedback to improve it. He’s open to any input that can help enhance it! Let's go! 🚀 Patrick is an aspiring CyberSecurity Analyst with a strong background in customer service and sales, where he developed a sharp attention to detail and problem-solving skills. He is currently focused on cybersecurity training and certifications, specializing in threat analysis, vulnerability assessment, and incident response. His experience in account management has equipped him with excellent communication skills, essential for translating complex information. Patrick aims to combine his customer-centric approach with his evolving technical expertise to protect organizations from cyber threats and contribute to a safer digital environment. Here’s a breakdown of the resume: 💡Action Verbs: Start each experience with an action verb; if it’s in a current position, you can put as present and if past, you put as -ed (Example of great action verbs: Collaborated, Executed) 💡Hard Skills: Put the specific hard skills and platform-based skills throughout the resume to show that you fit the job description's qualifications; in the Skills section of your resume, you can also have the skills and match them to your experiences where applicable. Example: To utilize advanced welding techniques to repair damaged metal parts, To conduct thorough inspections on # aluminum panels daily. 💡Impact metrics: these are numbers and percentages to showcase impact. How did you get these numbers either through a) asking your peers/managers b) calculated estimations (do not lie!). Example: resulting in a % increase in average order value and customer satisfaction rating of %.  💡Impact statements before the number/percentages: This showcases if you improved, optimized, or increased xyz. Example: "reducing the risk of data breaches by %." 💡Soft skills: more broad or simple statements, these are relative to collaboration, providing recommendations, and identifying solutions to potential problems. LinkedIn: Anyone else always shocked or am I in solo mode? ‘Cause how are you asking job-seekers for years of experience when the role says, ENTRY Level? Do you mean the years we've spent daydreaming about gaining experience? Or like our actual experience? Okay. We’ve kicked and cried. But these awkward jobs are still here. So now I think to myself, “if entry level applicants have years of experience, at what level do they get it?” Should have time-traveled to the future and got some experience while we were busy perfecting our PowerPoint skills 😓 BTW, guess what are they paying for this internship? Zero dollars! Everything is wrong with unpaid internships in this economy. But it hits a new low when years of experience is required. Note: I did do unpaid internships during university because I thought that was the way to land other opportunities...(didn't know any better as I didn't have many connections early on that could guide me) But I after reflecting, I realized that if someone is to put hours and hours in working, they should be compensated for it. But with the right response?  -- Rejection can redirect you to refine your interview abilities and update your qualifications, setting the stage for future success. -- Rejection over your inexperience can redirect you to seek opportunities in impactful areas like NGO volunteering. -- Getting rejected can even redirect you towards freelance or entrepreneurial pursuits, revealing new passions and career paths.
