Disasters and conflicts

UNEP works to minimize the environmental causes and consequences of crises.
UNEP

Since the beginning of this century, the world has witnessed more than 2,500 disasters and 40 major conflicts.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) operates globally to respond to natural disasters, industrial accidents, and human-induced crises. In the past two decades, the organization has supported dozens of crisis-affected countries and territories, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, and Sierra Leone.

UNEP provides innovative and efficient environmental solutions that help countries respond to crises and prepare for future emergencies. The organization also works to minimize the harmful effects of environmental degradation on human well-being.

The work on disasters and conflicts cuts across several key entities:

Disasters and Conflicts Branch

UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit

Environment and Security Initiative

The Programme on Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies on a Local Level

The Flexible Framework Initiative
