I like controller, but console feels cheap, and outer box came damaged.
Was disappointed that the console tamper proof sleeve came partially ripped, but the main box was mostly intact, and all the cords and accessories were in the right place, seemingly, everything looked clean for the most. The console was manufactured in December 2022, which is 7+ months sitting somewhere, which was quite weird for a "high demand item". With the poor box condition, was it previously opened, or attempted to be by someone else, was it sitting far back in a rough part of warehouse waiting to be sold, and someone mishandled during shipment, maybe on the way to my doorstep? Are the batteries inside the controller even at full capacity after 7 or so months in storage, how is the condition of the thermal compound as well? Liquid metal likes to settle on corners because of gravity I hear, which could affect performance down the line. So many questioned and concerns. My Xbox Series X was 1-2 months old at the time of purchase, so for a PS5 with ripped packaging to be older, raises the concern levels little, because of the console's overall history since its manufacturing and packaging.I opened up, everything in place and looks to be new. Booted the system up, left on Astro's in-game screen without strange behavior, mostly quiet fan and low heat output, relatively minor cosmetic flaws, and a slightly wiggly but mostly tight HDMI port, or has some sort of motherboard flex, so the quality isn't as good as the Series X. It's very plasticy and disc drive vibrates and buzzes, which the Series X doesn't. However, other than the D-pad, the controller feels better and more natural than the X/S controllers, so far.I hope Amazon can give me some sort of compensation for this. Thankfully, Sony set me up with a full warranty, but I still feel like my purchase should be justified, because boxes can be collectibles down the line, even if the console is unaffected, much like how people try to keep retro console boxes in good shape for many years. Also, being that the top has a tamper seal, the bottom clearly doesn't, so that purpose feels defeated. It's possible that during transport, someone grabbed the box and lifted it from the bottom, ripping the delicate sleeve at the center instead of grabbing it by the handle on top.I am going to assume these 'vanilla' units took a backstage when the bundles came out, and sales dropped, so now they dropped the price to $449 as I'm writing this to increase movement of the standard PS5 packages, which could mean that some weren't sold, and has something to do with the console being invite-only for so long.I hope Amazon can come to a small compensation, since I like keeping my console boxes.It's a great system, with nice resolution and screen scaling, many useful features, a revolutionary gamepad, and smooth gameplay.
