The Fonts pane of the Preferences window defaulted to a DPI of 100 on my system; however, the actual DPI reported by the X server would be 106. Wouldn't It Be Nice If... Mozilla could use this information as a default, or be configurable always to use the OS setting. I imagine there may be analoguous issues on other platforms but haven't tested this or anything. This was with Mozilla M17 built on 2000080712 - Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.2.14 i686; en-US; m17)

preferences "backend" means the mechanism of prefs itself. The contents or default values of any particular pref is handled by whatever component uses that pref. Taking a WAG that fonts fall under the Layout component

Adding Alec -- I believe he already had a patch in another bug to use the use the server's reported DPI if the dpi pref was set to 0. Whether that should be the default is another issue, since unfortunately, most Unix distributions (Linux and others) still misreport the DPI unless you manually change the X settings after installation.

well, if you just set the DPI in the prefs to 0, then mozilla will use your X server's defaults. However, let's keep this bug for making that the DEFAULT behavior - but that can't happen until we fix the skin bugs which I don't have handy right now

This seems to be WFM for a long time now. IOW, for a new profile, the initial setting is 0, and Moz uses the X server DPI. Why is this bug still open?
