Athlete Data Lab

With the explosion of wearable sensors and other data capturing systems, demand for continuous and point-in-time personal data from athletes has significantly increased across sports to power a variety of use cases including fan engagement (e.g., broadcast, social media, sports betting), injury prevention and performance optimization. The "Athlete Data Lab" will introduce students to legal issues relating to the collection, processing and use of an individual athlete’s personal data in these sectors. Working with representatives from Sports Data Labs, Inc., students will be given specific research projects tackling foundational issues relating to the capture, distribution and monetization of unique personal data collected from athletes through their use of on-body sensors and other data collection systems, with a focus on personal data collected during live sporting events.
