Talent Update

More than 300 nurses begin UK HealthCare career

UK HealthCare recently hired more than 300 registered nurses (RNs) as part of the University of Kentucky Human Resources Healthcare Recruiting’s implementation of a New Graduate Recruitment program. The RNs were hired from the academic year 2023-24.


It’s the latest step to hire thousands of health care workers over the next decade. 


As part of the program, UK HealthCare hired nursing graduates from 40 colleges and universities nationwide, including nearly 20 colleges in Kentucky. Of those graduate hires, 141 graduated from UK College of Nursing.


The New Graduate Recruitment program allows hiring managers and new graduates to connect and speed up the hiring process.

Celebrate UK Innovators at 

Patent Palooza! 2024

You are invited to the annual Patent Palooza! on Tuesday, October 15th from 4-6p in the Gatton Student Center, Ballroom 212A.


This event recognizes the incredible achievements of UK innovators, including successful intellectual property and commercialization deals, SBIR/STTR awards and the completion of entrepreneurship programs for fiscal year 2024.


This will be a great opportunity for our community to celebrate UK innovators, enjoy great food and beverages and connect with one another.

Outreach and Matchmaking Event - Bid Package 8 Fit Out University of Kentucky Cancer Center and

Advanced Ambulatory Building

Join us Monday, October 22, 2024 for a presentation and matchmaking session for the Bid Package 8 Fit Out of the 500,000 SF Cancer Center and Advanced Ambulatory Building for the University of Kentucky. 


Immediately following a project presentation will be a matchmaking meet and greet event. Firms will be able to meet potential partners to team up for the project. Walsh Group, UK and the Design Team will also be available to meet one-on-one with interested companies immediately following the presentation. Please bring your Capability Statements.

Place Update

CEDIK 2024 Community Design Summer Fellows Share Ideas to Revitalize Maysville

This summer, nine student fellows, along with faculty from the Community and Economic Initiative of KY (CEDIK)and the Department of Landscape Architecture worked alongside Maysville leadership to create a plan to revitalize the waterfront of Maysville, KY

 

Their summer began in early June with a river canoe journey along the Ohio River. At stops along the way, the fellows were interviewed by television media and public radio and spoke to elected officials and community leaders about the importance of the natural resource in relation to tourism and community development.

 

The summer culminated with a keynote presentation on their design plans and summer experiences at the 2024 Ohio River Way Annual Summit on September 12th.

Partnership Update

PPL partners with UK IDEA on award for up to $72 million in federal funding

PPL Corporation announced it has executed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy for an award up to $72 million to help fund a groundbreaking carbon dioxide capture research and development project.


The carbon capture project – developed in partnership with the University of Kentucky Institute for Decarbonization and Energy Advancement (UK IDEA) and others – represents a total investment of more than $100 million and will be hosted at the Cane Run generating station jointly owned and operated by PPL subsidiaries Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric Company.


UK IDEA has grown to be one of the nation’s most impactful research entities in the fields of carbon capture, conversion, hydrogen production and water treatment.

Meet the Team

Part of a monthly series to introduce the Economic Development Collaborative Leaders

Lisa Higgins-Hord is currently the Assistant Vice President for Community Engagement at the University of Kentucky and supervises the Office of Lifelong Learning which serves students over 50 years of age taking academic and extracurricular courses at the university. In her role at UK, she develops, implements, and assesses significant community-based projects that create robust partnerships between the University community (faculty, students and staff) and local, state and regional constituencies. She is also a partner of the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Consortium at the University of Kentucky which provides training, access and opportunities for faculty and their classes regarding community projects.


Lisa is a former City Councilwoman for District 6 in Lexington, Kentucky. She is also active in many state and local activities. Currently, Lisa serves on the UK Economic Engagement Subcommittee, appointed to the 250LEX Commission and serves as the Treasurer, Bank of the Bluegrass & Trust Board and serves as Corporate Governance Chair, the Board of the Blue Grass Community Foundation, and serves as a Co-Chair of the Lexington Black Prosperity Initiative.

She is the immediate past chair of the Carnegie Center for Literacy Board,


Lisa was born in Harlan County, Kentucky and raised in Lexington. Lisa continued her education at the University of Kentucky where she received her Bachelor’s and a Master's Degree.
