Financial Services Academy

The Financial Services Academy is a public private partnership between DISB, local education institutions, and private companies formed with the goal of training students for career opportunities in the financial services industry. The purpose of the academy is to:

  • introduce and expose underrepresented high-school and college students to the financial services sector;
  • eliminate barriers, like unpaid internships or scarce pre-career opportunities, for full student’s participation in the financial services sector; and
  • build a pathway for underrepresented communities to successfully gain full-time employment in the insurance, securities, and banking industries.

The DISB Financial Services Academy is a year-round program designed for youth aged 16-24 and students in high school, college, and post-graduate programs. The Academy is comprised of the four following programs:

  • Year-Round Internship Program (Spring and Fall semesters)
  • Year-Round Externships (Spring and Fall semesters)
  • Young Money Managers Intern Program
    • Bank on DC Youth Facilitator Initiative (Summer)
    • Insurance Intern Program (Summer)
    • Securities Intern Program (Summer)

Internships

DISB offers the opportunity for law and college students to obtain meaningful experiences while working as unpaid interns for the different bureaus of the Department. The Department offers unpaid internships that provide students with an opportunity to build valuable legal and professional skills in research, writing, and advocacy, while learning about different areas of DISB’s work, such as financial services law and policy (e.g., insurance, securities and banking), litigation, regulatory matters, employment and privacy law, contracts, and more.

Interns are typically assigned to one of DISB’s Bureaus (Office of the General Counsel (OGC), Insurance Bureau, Banking Bureau, Hearing Officer, Communications Division).

For OGC, interns will work with attorneys providing legal advice and counsel to agency leadership, research and writing, and in support of the Department’s financial services regulatory mission and operations. Interns also may be involved in matters related to proposed guidance, regulations, or legislation.

DISB will also provide our interns with first-hand professional opportunities. Interns may attend public hearings, particularly on topics related to insurance. We integrate our intern program with the Department’s broader intern program and provide our interns with many opportunities to meet other interns and participate in social activities within DISB.

For example, students interested in insurance law can perform an externship with the insurance attorneys in DISB OGC or work directly with the Insurance Bureau.
