The London season of 1874, a perfect time for the aristocracy to advance the marriage prospects of their offsprings, entertain themselves through various social engagements and, naturally, gossip to their heart's content.

Women of course were expected to be particularly invested in this time of year, having been raised to believe that marriage was the highest form of actualization for our sex. To keep house and breed children was our collective calling, or so we were told.

We were also taught that once we attained marital bliss, our husband would take ownership of our wealth, property and body. They probably would have passed a law to ensure our mind became theirs as well, had it occured to them that we might actually have one.

The Game

Designed for the One-page RPG Jam 2023, The London Season is a rules-light solo journaling role playing game inspired by the like of Last Tea Shop and Over the Mountain. Thematically, it drew significant inspiration from one of my favourite board game, Obsession, by Dan Hallagan as well as from a lovely micro game by Elizabeth Hargrave called Tussie Mussie. The game only requires the use of a standard deck of playing cards, a pen and some paper.

Create your young lady, decide if you hope to secure or avoid an engagement this season and carefully navigate 8 fortnights of glamorous events, social engagements and secret messages.

Thematic Thoughts

The game is half love letter and half poisoned pen for late 18th to early 20th century London, as romanticized by Jane Austen, Bridgerton and Downtown Abbey. It is hard for me to reconcile my enjoyment of these stories knowing all of the social inequities they gloss over. Be warned, you are unlikely to be able to play this game without being immersed in a world of sexism, classism and racism.

The Download

This game consists of a single two-sided page containing all of the rules and tables required to play the game. In addition, a low ink arial font version is available for those who would like to print it out.

New to itch. New to solo RPG-ing. But long-time fan and supporter of Obsession (look at the guidebook; my name will be there) and a writer to boot so this was a total no-brainer. I've been mostly collecting games and not playing, but this will definitely go to the top of my queue. After Druid and Thief and Monk perchance...

On behalf of itch and solo RPGers everywhere, welcome!! I’m super flattered you are considering starting your journey with my games! Obsession is an AMAZING design and I watched it climb the BGG ranking with great pleasure, thank you for your contribution to it!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have when you get started!

Amazing game! It's so addictive and inspiring! Rarely do I see a solo ttrpg that actually inspires character connection. <3

Thank you so much, I’m so glad you are enjoying it!

Found this by accident during a random Google search, but this is easily the most fun I've had solo'ing in a long time. A great game! I adjusted the rules slightly to work with tarot cards (because I don't have a card deck), and it still fits perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing this! My new favorite. :)

Thank you for the kind feedback, you absolutely made my day!

I can’t wait to start playing this!! (I found it right at bedtime.) I’ve been looking for a game like this (or like bachelorette tv show). I have the game Obsession, but haven’t gotten to play it yet. Thank you for making this!

I’m so glad the game found its audience! Thank you for the nice message (and get Obsession to the table - it plays great solo and you won’t regret it!)

A game I recommend anyone to Play. One of my favorite games on this edition of the One Page Rpg 2023, really inspiring. Great work!

Thank  you!!

I've not played the game yet, but both the game files and the game page are hard to read due to the font used. Maybe change to a serif font, to keep the old timey vibes?

“I told you so”, said my husband reading your comment over my shoulder. I admit I am unreasonably attached to this font — I made another version of the game with something more standard. And many thanks for taking the time to comment :)
