Pseudo-loan from Ancient Greek as if formed from a compound of μεγάλος (megálos, big) +‎ ὀδών (odṓn, tooth); coined by Swiss-born American scientist Louis Agassiz in 1843 as a specific epithet. By surface analysis, megalo- +‎ -odon.
