[edit]Inherited from Old Catalan puig (also spelled puix), from Latin podium (“balcony”), borrowed from Ancient Greek πόδιον (pódion, “base”). Doublet of podi and pòdium, both borrowings from Latin. Compare Occitan puèg, regional French puy (“mountain; hill”), Sicilian poju.
