[edit]From Old Norse ryðja, Proto-Germanic *rudjaną, a variant of Proto-Germanic *reudaną (“to clear”) (in Old Norse rjóða) and Proto-Germanic *rudōną (“to clear”) (cognates in German roden, rotten reuten).
