[edit]From Old Norse svefn, from Proto-Germanic *swefnaz, cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk svevn, søvn, Swedish sömn, English sweven (archaic). The Germanic word goes back to Proto-Indo-European *swépnos (“sleep”), which is also the source of Latin somnus and Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos). Related to the verb sove (“to sleep”).
