From Ancient Greek ζυγωτός (zugōtós, yoked), past participle of ζυγόω (zugóō, to yoke), from ζυγόν (zugón, yoke), from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm (yoke). By surface analysis, zygo- +‎ -ote. Cognate with yoke and jugular.
