[edit]From Proto-Oceanic *kafu (“to cover, to put on clothing”) (compare with Maori kahu, Samoan ʻafu, Tongan kafu), from Proto-Oceanic *kaput (“to wrap, to cover”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kaput (“to tie or clasp together”).[1][2][3]
