[edit]From Middle High German kennen, a conflation of Old High German kennan (“to know”) and kunnan (“to be able to”), from Proto-West Germanic *kannijan (“to make known”) and *kunnan (“to know”).
Compare German kennen (“to know”) and können (“to be able to”). Cognate to English ken and can, and more distantly know.
