Dominic Noonan (born 1966)[1] is an English organised crime figure.[2] Dominic Noonan, with his brother Desmond "Dessie" Noonan, headed a criminal organisation or "crime firm" in Manchester, England during the 1980's and 1990's and is a member of one of Manchester's most infamous crime families. [3]

Noonan has more than 40 convictions for a wide range of offenses including armed robbery, police assault, possesion of firearms, prison escape and fraud [4] and has spent has spent 22 years in prisions across Britain.[5] Although Noonan is alleged to have been involved with a number of gangland murders, he has never been convicted. [6]

Personal Life

The Noonan family first rose to notoriety in the Manchester gang scene after the murder of "White Tony" Johnson,[7] [8] the leader of the Cheetham Hill Gang, who was gunned down in 1991.[9]

Dominic Noonan became involved in the hijacking of armoured security vans in his early career, his arrest record includes charges of torture, kidnapping and drug possession. Although he presently runs a security company, authorities believe Noonan continues hijacking and armed robbery with members of the Noonan crime family. [10]

Documentaries

Dominic Noonan and his brother Desmond were the subject of a 2006 documentary A Very British Gangster (or MacIntyre's Underworld) directed by Donal MacIntyre. [11] During the introduction to the documentary Donal MacIntyre describes Dominic Noonan as "a dangerous, maniacal Christopher Biggins".[12] The documentary showed a softer, less familiar side of Dominic, a side that cares a great deal for his son and family, his neighbours and friends. The film showed how the family act as an unofficial community police force or social services - with many neighbours and associates preferring to come to the Noonan's in times of trouble or family crisis rather than go to the relevant authorities - often insisting that doing so is more beneficial. [13]

Urdu speaking Dominic was seen to command a certain respect from all ethnicities in his local area.[14] During the filming of A Very British Gangster, Desmond was stabbed and died in the ambulance from his wounds.[15] Hundreds of sombre locals and associates lined the streets to pay their respects to "Dessie" as the traditional funeral cortege passed by.

During the documentary Dominic is asked by MacIntyre about rumours that he is homosexual.[16] Dominic answers in the affirmative, saying "Everyone knows that I'm gay" - or words to that effect. This casual admission comes as a surprise in the film because Dominic's life and demeanor, and his relationship to the clearly impoverished community in Manchester, does not conform to any dominant popular stereotypes of gay men.
