The idea spawned as a thought between Marjun Hoydal and Bogi Nielsen. They found that a faroese student choir was needed, in Copenhagen. Marjun contacted [[Bogi Karbeh Mouritsen]] with this idea, and they all started contacting would be singers. This was in december 1997 and january 1998. By february 1998 the choir was formally established consisting of some 16-18 singers lead by Bogi Karbech Mouritsen. The first concert was in april 1998 in a suburb to Copenhagen. For this occation the choir needed a name, and after some arguing, the name Empiri was taken. The next year, the name was changed to Mpiri - keeping the pronounciation.
In the fall of 2000, winner of Nordic Council Music Prize 2002, [[Sunleif Rasmussen]] took over as conductor. He stayed on until the fall of 2002 when he moved to the Faroe Islands. During the early spring of 2003, Sunleif came back to finish the record of the first CD - Asbest - with Mpiri.
In the spring of 2003, [[Gorm Larsen]] took over as conductor of Mpiri.

* In the early years, Mpiri put great effort into being ''new'' in the expression. Stribing to challenge the singers as well as the audience, the repertoire was often modern and the performance tried to make use of uncommon settings, lighting and apparel. Mpiri always made a point of keeping in touch with the faroese heritage.
* During the years with Sunleif Rasmussen, Mpiri changed a bit into a more classical style. The choir now became more schooled in the classical way of singing, and still keeping in touch with the ''modern'' repertoire, the choir now began performing more classical music.
* During the years with Gorm Larsen, Mpiri has become more of a tightly knit unit. Working hard with an external singing teacher, focussing on technique and gaining a uniform sound, the choir has moved into a higher league. The repertoire is a mix of complex renaissance music and modern music, sometimes with accompagnement, but staying clear of traditional rythmic music.

* In the fall of 2002, Mpiri started record their first CD - '''Asbest'''. Of the 11 songs, 5 were new compositions commisioned by Mpiri.
* In the spring of 2006, Mpiri was asked to participate with 3 songs on Kári Bæks CD '''Flóðir av ljósi'''.
* In 2007 Mpiri recorded a 15 christmas carols and songs, for their CD '''Upp gleðist''' which was released in november 2007.

Me

I am a faroese man living in Copenhagen, Denmark. I was born in Denmark but keep close connection with my faroese heritage.

Mpiri is a choir I founded together with my faroese friends Marjun Hoydal and Bogi Nielsen. They found that a faroese student choir was needed, in Copenhagen, and asked if I would be interested in starting a new faroese choir in Denmark. Thus Mpiri was founded in 1998 with me as the conductor for the first 2,5 years. At that point the choir had outgrown my capabilities as a conductor and since then I have been a singer in Mpiri.
