What we'll do together

[edit]

We'll kick this event off with a short talk by Anthony Amiewalan, whose books we're excited to have in our LGBTQIA collection.

Following that, we'll give a brief introduction to editing Wikipedia and an overview on how attendees can get started.

We'll spend time editing Wikipedia until 3:30pm; please feel free to drop in and edit any time between 12:30 and 3:30pm.

Afterwards, attendees are welcome to join us from 4 to 5pm for a reception celebrating the library's new LGBTQIA collection -- and celebrating all our hard work editing Wikipedia!

About our Guest Speaker: Anthony Amiewalan

[edit]

Anthony Amiewalan (Ami-wellan) is a first-generation Nigerian American, who was born in the South, grew up in the Midwest, and for a short time lived on the West Coast. He is now based in Bedstuy with his longtime partner. Anthony pulls from his Nigerian heritage, inspired by wood carvings, colorful geometric patterns, and clean, sharp lines to create his illustrations. He incorporates his experiences living throughout the country, traveling abroad, and interpersonal relationships to develop what he calls "a visual diary." Anthony's educational and professional pursuits have been in economic development, reinforced by his Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from San Jose State University.

Although Anthony has never formally studied art, he has always loved painting and drawing as a form of self-reflection and mediation – and as an outlet for creative expression. Anthony has published three books. His most recent title is Eddie & Alan, a work of fiction. At its heart, this story seeks to shed light on the complexities of relationships between men, the fluidity of sexuality, and what happens when the lines are blurred. He is the author of Jojoba (Hah-hoh-bah), his coming-of-age story of coming to terms with his sexuality and redefining success for himself. Anthony is the illustrator of A Visual Diary, a book of illustrations filled with colorful images that reflect his personality and inner thoughts. He works full-time as a public servant for the City of New York City, as the Director of Buyer Services, to encourage and support the thoughtful inclusion of women and minority-owned businesses in all city-funded projects to ensure the City of New York's suppliers reflect the diversity of New York City.

Library Resources

[edit]

City Tech Library is excited to launch its new LGBTQIA collection. You can find these materials shelved on the staircase in the library; we've also pulled some of them out specifically to use in this editathon.

City Tech faculty and students can also use online resources from the library. Explore our database list to get started, or take a look at some of these useful databases:

Getting Started: Articles that need basic cleanup

[edit]
  • Kehinde Wiley: the existing Wikipedia article is flagged as needing copyediting
  • Jordan Casteel (featured in the library book Young, Gifted and Black): the existing Wikipedia article is flagged as having a promotional tone; see if you could edit it to include more academic sources and if you could change the overall tone.

Digging in: Existing Articles to Add To

[edit]
  • Ma-Nee Chacaby: we have her book, A Two Spirit Journey. The existing Wikipedia article needs more information; one place to start is adding section headings and looking for other sources to cite.
  • GenderFail: the existing Wikipedia article needs better, scholarly citations.
  • Disability Studies: the existing Wikipedia article has an extensive section on crip theory, but you could look further into possible additions
  • New York Women's House of Detention: the existing Wikipedia article is decent, but just has one short quote from Hugh Ryan’s book (which we have at City Tech). An editor could create a separate section on the queer history of Women’s House of Detention
  • Samuel Levi Jones (featured in the library book Young, Gifted and Black): the existing Wikipedia article is classified as a stub, which means that it’s very short and needs more added to it
  • D'Angelo Lovell Williams (featured in the library book Young, Gifted and Black): the existing Wikipedia article is a pretty short one that needs more added to it

Up For a Challenge? New Material to Create

[edit]

While some of these subjects might not have enough material to create new articles, we could create new Wikidata items about them all! Curious about editing Wikidata? Feel free to ask for help

Other Work to Explore

[edit]

The Wiki Loves Pride Tasks page has a sampling of possible articles to create or improve, among other tasks to consider.
