ChatGPT and the other user

[edit]

I just wanted to ask you what telltale signs made you determine that user Raayaan9911 was using ChatGPT in responding to me. I certainly felt like I was talking to a brick wall because the responses were so off-the-wall and irrelevant to what I had said, but my initial inclination was to chalk that up to any or all of (a) someone for whom English may not be a first language, (b) someone who may have been using templated responses, (c) someone with "special needs" (I won't take that comment any further than that), or (d) someone who just plain wants to troll. I have some suspicions that Raayaan9911 might be a sockpuppet of (1) a user I reported earlier this summer who was then banned and (2) the user (now banned as a sockpuppet) who made the edit that prompted my edit summary about which Raayaan9911 was purporting to complain, but the usual investigative tools aren't turning anything up so far. As you will have seen from my comments, I found it puzzling and annoying that someone who's been a registered user for two weeks would adopt such a high-handed approach, but if it's a use of generative artificial intelligence that would explain a lot. Long way of saying, I'm interested in knowing what you looked for to identify such a use. Thanks! 1995hoo (talk) 16:04, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@1995hoo: I find it pretty easy to recognize at this point. Stuff like It's important to maintain a respectful and professional tone in all contributions to ensure a positive and collaborative editing environment and If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out. We value your contributions and are here to support you in maintaining a positive and respectful editing environment. are classic ChatGPT responses. It just isn't natural. I imagine English isn't their first language judging by their responses (Ahh Okay i Type Myself) and otherwise poor grammar in articles. I only found this user because their grammar in articles was so poor that it was flagged as "potentially unconstructive" on Recent Changes. Now, there's not necessairly anything wrong with that in itself, but ChatGPT is certainly not helping. C F A 💬 16:19, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Most of what I know about ChatGPT comes from the stories in the legal press here in the USA about attorneys who have landed in hot water when they tried to use ChatGPT for legal research and it fabricated case citations (obviously a huge problem that will not get a happy response from a court). But I agree, the "We value your contributions" language was exceptionally strange for a single user to employ, especially a new user who is pretty obviously not an administrator. Incidentally, I would never have found this user but for a message the user left on my talk page complaining that I used "offensive language" in an edit summary, apparently referring to my use of a grawlix. Hopefully I won't have any further interactions with that user! Thanks for the information on ChatGPT. 1995hoo (talk) 16:25, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's also worth noting that GPTZero (an AI detector) returned "100% AI" for both of their responses, now that I've checked. It's pretty much guaranteed at this point. C F A 💬 16:34, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. All the more reason to delete the comment that started all this from my talk page, then. I very much appreciate your assistance! 1995hoo (talk) 16:42, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
CFA I Never Use a ChatGPT Again in Articles. If you think i made mistake? You can leave me in talk page Raayaan9911 (talk) 20:47, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of Raayaan9911, I noticed on my first day (two days ago) that he sent me a notice on my talk page. He accused me of vandalizing the Build.com page. However, all my edits were in good faith, attempting to make the page less of an advert. He also sent a warning about me to SHCarter, though I don't think he saw it. When I approached him about it, asking him for a good reason for the reverts, reminding him that his threats to suspend me were empty (he is not an admin), he simply reverted his reverts, and deleted everything related to the incident. However, you can still find the discussion on my talk page. He also edited my page without asking simply because I tongue-in-cheekly used the {user rickroll} template on my own page, which is really a nothing burger. Do you have any idea why he seems more concerned about policing me than actually helping the Wiki? Oxfordcommasaregreat (talk) 13:28, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Feedback on AfC Draft Submission

[edit]

Hello C F A,

I am seeking your assistance with a draft I have been working on. Could you please provide feedback on [specific issues or aspects of the draft]?

Thank you for your time and help.

Best regards, Arthur Watkins Arthurwatkins2904 (talk) 20:43, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Arthurwatkins2904:: Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! The main issue with your draft is that the references aren't formatted properly. See Help:Referencing for beginners to see how to add citations/footnotes in Wikipedia style. I also suggest taking a look at other articles to see how Wikipedia formats them. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy editing, C F A 💬 20:52, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Direct Listings

[edit]

I hope that the main issue is that I had the link to the source of stock trading volume data in the text, rather than as a footnote (now footnote 4, I think, linking to BigCharts.com).

GNVquant (talk) 20:59, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GNVquant: Thanks for the improvements. The fifth paragraph is still completely unsourced, so it is unclear where that information came from. Is direct public offering not the same topic? C F A 💬 21:07, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the prompt and useful feedback.
The Wikipedia entry on Direct public offering (DPO) is fine, except for the first sentence, which is completely wrong. A DPO is NOT a direct listing. Direct listings involve registered securities. The DPO Wikipedia entry should be altered to delete “or direct listing” from the first sentence. DPOs are essentially small  private placements of unlisted securities, as the Wikipedia article correctly describes. Direct listings are the initiating of trading on Nasdaq or the NYSE by companies, many of which have market caps of tens of billions of dollars (such as Coinbase and Spotify), and are not private placements. Should I edit the DPO Wikipedia entry to remove the incorrect “or direct listing” phrase?
By way of background: I am widely viewed as the world’s leading academic expert on initial public offerings and direct listings. When Spotify did its direct listing, for instance, the CFO sought my advice. When Google decided to do an auction IPO in 2004, management sought my advice about the merits of an auction IPO versus a bookbuilt IPO.
For the fifth paragraph, the information about the reference prices mainly comes from the same source as footnote 3: My website, where I give the numbers for every direct listing. I didn't add a footnote because I didn't want to have too many references to my website, which is widely used by journalists, venture capitalists, money managers, and academics. Should I add a footnote linking to my "Direct Listings" page? GNVquant (talk) 21:32, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have noted your warming to this user about adding information without a source (per Liv Morgan). This user I suspect is not well versed with the rules and I also suspect English isn't his first language. I have recommended to him that he seek help as I just reverted some original research from the Liv Morgan article. He may need to be watched. I think he's not trouble - just yet. Questions about IMBD, NY Post and Broadway World

[edit]

Hi CFA, I'm helping to put up Darlinda Just Darlinda's wikipedia page and I'm curious why these links below aren't considered reliable link sources? Or are we linking them incorrectly? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Rebecca https://www.imdb.com/ https://nypost.com/ https://www.broadwayworld.com/ RebeccaMRosenthal (talk) 18:44, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@RebeccaMRosenthal: Hi, IMDB is not reliable because it is user-generated content. The Wikipedia community decided the New York Post is not reliable because it has a history of publishing incorrect information and poor fact-checking (see WP:NYPOST). Broadway World was also deemed unreliable because it reposts press releases disguised as authentic content (see WP:RSP#BroadwayWorld). More importantly, who is "we" and how do you know Darlinda Just Darlinda? And who is Victorlewisg, who created and submitted the draft? Please not that this draft will not be accepted unless you disclose your conflict of interest or financial stake in the topic. Thank you. C F A 💬 22:18, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Super dangerous.I believe wikipedia article was made on purpose. What do you think? J2009j (talk) 23:28, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@J2009j: I have no experience with Simple Wikipedia so I'm not familiar with their guidelines or how they work. There's an entry here at Michael Graziano that was accepted by Articles for Creation in 2010, likely because the subject met WP:NACADEMIC (see this section on the talk page) – which has different requirements than the General notability guideline. NACADEMIC is one English Wikipedia guideline that I'm not very familiar with. I tend to avoid academic articles at AfD and AfC unless they are an obvious fail. You are free to nominate it for deletion but I have no clue if the subject meets NACADEMIC so I won't be of much help. Happy editing, C F A 💬 15:51, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Those are two different people. The one on Wikipedia is a scientist, and on simple wikipedia- that is a scammer. Two completely different pages. So I do not understand what is happening here. When you remove "simple" from the link of scammer it takes you to the different wikipedia page of the scientist. J2009j (talk) 17:24, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@J2009j: Huh. You're right. They are both described as a "scientist and novelist" but are about different people. The Simple Wikipedia page was created last month by an IP and has not been edited since. Again, I'm not familiar with Simple Wikipedia's notability guidelines or deletion processes, but I assume they're similar to here. I suggest you nominate it for deletion over there if you don't think the subject meets their guidelines. C F A 💬 17:55, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft : Michael Beil

[edit]

Thank you for reviewing my draft article on Michael Beil (Draft:Michael Beil). I read that the submission was declined. Could you perhaps elaborate a bit on the two critiques? I have already, as you requested, removed the external links from the main text.

  1. I've been working very hard on supporting every statement in the article with reliable sources. Could you please point out some examples of statements or passages that are not adequately supported and/or sources that are not considered reliable?

2. I've be sifting through the article (and had several colleagues of mine read it) in search for peacock terms, promotional tone or language that is otherwise not neutral, and I can't find out what seems to be so problematic. I do admit that the text isn't bone dry, but I've read many Wikipedia articles on classical composers and their music that aren't. If you see any problematic wording, could you please point out one or two examples?

As you can see, I've been working on the article for a very long time and I would really like to see it published.

Thank you for your advice!

All the best RDiependaele (talk) 20:28, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@RDiependaele: Hi, right now your draft reads like an essay. Personal interpretations and analysis do not belong in Wikipedia articles (e.g.: The realization of such compositions also requires complex production conditions, and very disciplined actions and skilled theatricality on the part of the musicians. Therefore, they are usually created in close collaboration with the performers., Recognizable quotations from existing works by other composers are inspiring building blocks for Beil because of the emotional charge or the references already attached to them. It is those connotations that the composer uses as material – a new meaning that can fade or appear subsequently by incorporating the quotations in new musical contexts., Those compositions, which were in line with the usual conventions of their genres, at the same time sharpened his interest in the visual dimensions of concert performance. In this sense, they helped create the ground for Beil's later artistic work, which focuses on the interaction between sound and image., etc. Some parts are also blatant advertising (e.g.: Beil makes his own scores, MAX patches and tapes available simply and free of charge through his website.). Wikipedia does not care about what the subject says about themself (ex: through their own website). The majority of the references I spot-checked do not verify the information provided either. Original research does not belong on Wikipedia. You should only summarize what reliable, secondary sources have said him.
Those were the blatant fails I declined your draft for. I also don't see how the subject meets either the notability guideline for musicians or the general notability guideline for people, which is something you'll have to prove in order for your draft to be accepted.
