Queen Beast

A slightly edited version of my review on steam.

I usually don't read that many visual novels, usually because I skim through the story or whether it presents some sort of usual cliche you'll see, maybe a trope or two that are overused. But I've never seen a VN so great, that it's been made available for free!

From it's witty dialogue, underlining its tone from taking it casual and switching to serious discussions/moments, the unique character design of each character; Otto, Echo, Switch, etc. The characters are incredibly well written, especially both Otto and Switch; their dynamic together is awesome! Or tiny details you wouldn't notice such as whenever you check the map, it highlights the details/events that took place in that area or something like that.

What almost got me was the epilogue; y'know the saying men don't cry... kinda made me tear up a bit haha- I do hope this continues or something like a spin-off because I'd love to see more! Maybe a new cast? Reoccurring ones? The opportunities are so endless! Maybe I'm being a bit opportunistic but this is probably in my top 10 VNs; up there with VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk, Occult Rewrite, The Red Strings Club, etc.

An amazing read that has to be tried once, almost makes me want to come for more!

Played through this over the weekend and I was just non-stop delighted at the  90's fantasy OVA energy and writing. The plot is self-contained and compact with just enough of intrigue past the ending to leave you wanting more, but still feeling satisfied.  The characters are a brilliant mix of well written believable people, but their interactions also end up intensely funny a lot of the time too.  

The presentation obviously speaks for itself, and the writing/prose is absolutely top shelf in every way. It's hard to really find much to complain about with this game. I simply enjoyed every time I got a chance to sit down and read through a chapter.

This is a game that I honestly can't believe I paid nothing for. I almost feel like I got away with something having not paid for it.  

An absolute gem for anyone needing a good short VN that's still very fleshed out and charming.

I appreciate having the beautiful prose and exciting adventure plot mixed in with jokes that, at times, had me wheezing with laughter. I feel like everyone in this cast found one way or another to worm their way into my heart, and I felt a little sad to see them off by the end. Thank you for this delight of a story.

Really really adored this.  I always have a hold-your-breath "oh god please let the writing be good too" moment starting any visual novel this immediately arrestingly gorgeous art-wise, so I was super-pleased the storytelling and jokes and characters were all so wonderful. Just a great package, thanks for making and sharing this.

this is such a wonderful game, thank you for sharing it, the fact you choose to release such a polished labor of love for free is praiseworthy! i hope the team can make many more games in the future :)

It's just everything I was looking for in a visual novel, you and your team have a great sense of taste for art and storytelling. Queen Beast has really earned a space in my heart, and has left me with a void for the end of it. I'm going to follow you on twitter because I look forward to your next works.

PS: I can't sleep because of the ending :c. Otto waited for Switch forever or did she come back one day? Will you continue the story or will she close there?

So I've been banging my head against the wall trying to find the staff room that unlocks after you finish and I'm just wondering is it supposed to be obvious or am I supposed to puzzle it out?

Hey, I think you might have switched the Windows and Linux versions. I couldn't get it running through the itch launcher, but installing the other version from the website worked.

In terms of the game itself, I'm really happy this was recommended to me. I would have completely missed this otherwise. It's a really lovely fantasy adventure game with a fun cast and, as everyone else has already mentioned, amazing art. Please tell me you at least have a patreon, because I'd feel bad not paying you.

Can I ask, do you have any plans for a sequel with the same characters or a sequel set in the same world, with the world building done for the places outside the main country?

I can't believe this is free. You didn't put a miner or something else alongside the program, did you? Jokes aside, it was a very enjoyable experience that left me wanting for more. I will be watching your future endeavors with great interest.

What an *incredible* fairy-tale romp of adventure, romance, action, horror, and comedy! It's like The Princess Bride, and anyone familiar knows this is huge praise.

This was good fun. Thank you for making it! I'm astonished that it was free, given its scale and the attention to detail in things like the map. It really did feel like experiencing a moderately-horny, tonally-variable 80s/90s fantasy OVA in visual novel form, not just in the art and plot but right down to things like being primarily presented in 4:3, the morally correct aspect ratio.
