Taipo
A 2d tower defense game that you control by typing in Japanese or English! Type words and phrases and defeat enemies to earn Yen.
Instructions
Sorry, the web version doesn't work with non-qwerty keyboard layouts right now.
Type the romanized form of one of the words/phrases in the action panel and press enter.
Type as if you were typing in the macOS IME. ん, っぴ, づ, カー, etc.
The following actions are available

Select a tower by typing the tower slot's label
- Build a tower for 20円
- Shuriken Tower: 1 damage to a single enemy
- Good Pupper Memorial Tower: +1 damage to nearby towers
- Coffee Tower: Adds -2 boss armor debuff to a single enemy
- Upgrade a tower for 10円 (range + 1)
- Sell a tower for half the price paid for it
- Go Back
- Type a word/phrase to earn 1円
- Type "help" to show romaji
- Type "mute" to toggle sound

This was really fun to play. In the beginning I sold my towers by accident a couple of times but I got the hang of it eventually.

We could definitely be doing a lot more to either teach folks how to play or make it more obvious. Open to suggestions!
But I haven't been super motivated to work on this outside of keeping up with engine updates.
It's fine. The only thing I would add is a restart command. I think that's missing.
Cool. That's on my to-do list, but I added a GitHub issue here: https://github.com/rparrett/taipo/issues/10 so I know to prioritize it. I'll swing back around to Taipo after Bevy Jam 4 ends in a week or so.

Thanks! I'll put keyboard stuff at the top of the list. I was hoping that it would have been fixed in the engine by now, but I can probably work around it or add an option.
I was looking back into this and remembering that this is only an issue for web builds.
In the meantime, qwertz should work fine in the native build for your platform. If you'd rather not run mysterious binaries from itch, the game is completely open source and easy to build.

Hey, just found this on the Rust gamedev newsletter and I really enjoy it (might be coming back here for "study sessions" in the future)!
One comment I have is that I really struggled with some of the IME-like input since the behavior seems to not be quite the same as what I'm used to. Some examples:
`enpi` -> えんぴ (game requires `ennpi`. IME allows `n` followed by any consonant, I think)
`tu` -> つ (requires 'tsu')
`ti` -> ち (requires `chi`)
There might be a few others as well I didn't notice or which I don't tend to use, (e.g. `li` -> ぃ, `xyo` -> ょ).
But, especially since this is a time-sensitive kind of game, it would be nice to support some of these common shortcuts. Maybe it would be useful to use a library like https://docs.rs/wana_kana/
I can create a Github issue too if you'd like. Nice work on what you have so far though! I've been looking for a study tool/game like this.

This is definitely something I would like to improve. Right now, the game only allows for one sequence of ascii characters to represent a chunk of text. These are manually defined in the word lists. I just chose the romanizations that I'm personally used to typing on the MacOS IME.
It's probably #1 on my list, but I don't really have a design in mind to fix it at the moment. I don't know if it's possible to make every user happy here, or if some sort IME settings screen would be needed.
The constraints I have are that I'd like for the game to continue to be compatible with non-Japanese languages, and I would like to make it easy for users to use their own word lists in the future.
Feel free to create a github issue, and we can move some of this information there. I've gotten a bit busy recently, but I'll have a bit more free time soon and would be very open to collaborating on this.
