Firelights v1.1 Update

Hey everyone,

First, I want to thank you all for your interest in checking out Firelights. The overall reception for this game and its engine has been overwhelmingly positive, and that's been absolutely wonderful.

I wanted to announce that I've updated Firelights to v1.1 which includes some small tweaks to the text to make things more accessible and easy to understand.

Here's the changelog.

Value for Aces, Jacks, Queens and Kings: Some people mentioned that the game should include some description to talk about the number value of face cards and aces. I've added the text below to clarify this aspect of the game.

  • Aces are worth 1, Jacks are worth 11, Queens are worth 12, and Kings are worth 13

Discovering a dead-end: Someone mentioned on Reddit that they'd discovered 8 dead-ends in a row when playing the game. I've run the numbers and this is an extremely rare use case, but I still wanted to account for it. I've changed the text of the game so that instead of saying its a dead-end, the game hints that there's indeed a path forward, but the path is hidden. You may need to confront risk to actually discover what lies ahead. The rest of the story is up to you.

  • When you look for a new path, Action+Approach to expand your map. Roll on the tables for inspirations. ◆ Upon Light, add the two cards to your map. ◆ Upon Shade, add one of the cards to your map. ◆ Upon Darkness, the path is hidden, mark 1  Fatigue.

More Flexible Oracle: Someone in the Fari community mentioned that the Oracle was missing an option for handling cases where things are neither likely or unlikely. I had thought in the past about changing the number of cards you draw to fix this, but this made this action too different from the rest of the system. Same goes for applying negative modifier. When a player cannot rely on things being similar from one part of the system to the next, it creates confusion. So instead, I've decided to change the text as follows. You may realize that this result distribution will tend to go towards the "Yes, and..." result, even if things are unlikely. This is by design since I've always found things more interesting when the story moves forward, but with a twist. Similar to the new dead-end changes in the Discover a Region section.

  • When you want answers to a yes/no question,  Action+2 if likely. Action+0 if unlikely. Action+1 otherwise.

And that's it for now! The new PDFs have been uploaded to the itch page.

Now go ignite those beacons, Firelights!
