I did consider this, but the styles as they exist recreate the layout of the original text (see attached image containing two examples from the PDF scan of the book; the same layout pattern is used at the beginning of the chapters).

No worries! And thank you for the inquiry; while checking to make sure I hadn’t missed some indentation exceptions, I realized I’d left a little too much space between paragraphs as compared to the original, so that’s now on my list of touch-ups.

It is a tricky balance. Your project has left me with many questions regarding the digital translation of a book, what to preserve, what to part with.

I have the Diccionario de Historia de Venezuela in my mind: a wonderful design by Alvaro Sotillo that won a Gutenberg in 97. The digital translation —made by the same studio— does not come near the original. Do take a look, though, particularly to the footnotes, which are beautiful.
