How We Treat Acquired, Traumatic Brain Injury

Goodwill NeuroRehabilitation Services helps people rediscover their brain’s talents, capacity and abilities after an injury. Our team of case managers, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech language pathologists, and others treat the cognitive, emotional and physical needs of patients with brain injuries. We teach the skills needed for daily living, such as physical mobility, memory, and communication.

Treatment occurs in our centers and in real-world scenarios. We also offer telehealth services. We take patients to the supermarket to shop, to where they work, or visit them at home to relearn valuable life skills. We work with caregivers, doctors, funding sources, advocacy organizations and other community agencies to develop and deliver care that is designed to help patients reach stability.

If patients are in a hospital or an inpatient rehabilitation setting, we can schedule a meeting in person. Goodwill NeuroRehab clinics are open by appointment only.

What We Treat: Concussions, strokes, chemo brain and TBI symptoms

We serve people with an array of diagnoses, building a customized plan after gathering information necessary to determine eligibility. To be eligible for NeuroRehabilitation, a person must be able to respond to people and surroundings and be medically stable at the time of treatment.

Our comprehensive treatment team is highly trained, licensed and certified to address symptoms that arise as a result of an acquired brain injury including:

Staff help treat: Traumatic brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury, stroke brain tumors, chemo brain, Multiple Sclerosis, concussion, mild cognitive impairment, anoxic of hypoxic events, seizure disorder, toxic exposure, Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy and more.

Individuals must have a payment source. We accept most insurance plans including MaineCare, Medicare B, commercial insurance, workers’ compensation, vocational rehabilitation and private pay. Transportation is available to all MaineCare clients through transportation agencies such as Modivcare.

Now offering fun, therapeutic group activities 5 days a week

Many clients participate in half-day or full-day enrichment activities at our NeuroRehab locations. At the direction of Goodwill’s neuropsychologist, our staff offer goal-driven, exciting group activities such as: wood shop, equine therapy, art, gardening, and many other activities that are dictated by clients’ interests and goals. These client groups go on monthly excursions in the community, including trips to nearby islands, apple picking, aquariums and more. Acquiring a brain injury causes many people to feel isolated, but these group activities offer enriching, therapeutic social interaction up to five days a week.

NeuroFeedback therapies

Goodwill NNE now offers NeuroFeedback, which can help treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, and more in a noninvasive way. It also can help healthcare staff diagnose autism, schizophrenia, brain injury, and more without relying solely on self-reported symptoms. In this video Clinical Director Mackenna Murtagh, Psy.D., explains how NeuroFeedback works:

Virtual Reality therapies

Clients work to regain their balance, coordination and more through therapeutic exercises in Virtual Reality. Goodwill staff help guide clients through various situations — from controlling anxiety in a module where a grocery store gets increasingly crowded, to walking across a virtual high-wire to work on balance in a fun, playful way. Virtual Reality allows clients to track their progress over time.

Child and Adolescent Brain Injury Services

If your child (age 7+) has a brain injury or brain condition, our team of rehabilitation experts can provide comprehensive and family-centered rehabilitation. We work collaboratively with your child’s support network, and include continuous input from your child, your family and school into all areas of treatment.

We understand every child’s need to learn and play so we incorporate these activities into individual and group therapy treatments. All of our treatments are highly specialized and individualized to be able to meet a wide range of mild to severe needs. Your child will be treated by a professional group of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and more, all under the clinical direction of a neuropsychologist.

Brain injury is the leading cause of disability and death for young people in the United States and can be the result of a fall, motor vehicle collision, skiing accident, sports injury and even assault. Goodwill recognized the need for local, affordable, comprehensive, community-based brain injury treatment. Out of our belief in helping individuals reach stability in their lives, we created our NeuroRehabilitation Services.

Scope of Services

Three-Year CARF Accreditation

Goodwill regularly analyzes the performance of our programs by tracking and reporting efficiency and effectiveness outcome measures. Goodwill recently received its ninth Three-Year accreditation from CARF, Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. The CARF Three-Year accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards and that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable, and accountable.
