This was quite a fun little game.  I like how the meteors give you something to do while the factories do their thing.  The hitboxes on the meteors also felt nice and generous.  Probably would just like there to be more to do.  My strategy was pretty simple: get one speed upgrade as quickly as possible and then just have nothing but factories/gas refineries/whatever i need till the end.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game!
There were more stuff to do (upgrades, buildings) in the original design. Unfortunately most were cut due to lack of time.

Fun game and I like the style/aesthetic! Agree with what others have said regarding difficult control at higher speeds and vehicle blending into buildings. Otherwise, great game!

Really dig the simple aesthetic and music! The game plays great. I think the meteors should be a little larger, as it's really hard to hit them once you have that max speed upgrade. I think the design of the ship should be a little different as well since it blends in with the buildings due to the limited color palette. Overall, well done!

Thank you for the the feedback.
Based on player's feedback we are already testing a couple of methods to allow better handling of the player's vehicle at higher speed.
As for the blending of player's vehicle and buildings using a 1px black border around the player's vehicle seems to works quite well to prevent the effect.
Both changes will be added in a small post jam update when the uploads are unlocked.

I had a lot of fun playing this one.  Great vibes and well put together little game.

this was really neat, it was like a combination of genres between missile command and an idle game! it was really interesting like this, it felt like there were more stakes involved on both ends, which made it work super well. i loved the aesthetic you chose to go with for this game, too. there’s a lot of games nowadays that try to go for a retro aesthetic, but you never see anything that tries to replicate this specific era. i would like to second how it’s a little difficult to stay precise at higher speeds, but honestly, i kind of like the difficulty increase as you get later into the game like this. cool stuff and great job!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game!
I really like the "simplicity" of the CGA era visuals not to mention some of my favorites non adventure games (Sopwith, Alley cat) were using this visual style.
Another jammer suggested using interpolation for speed something that could help with the higher speeds.
This along a few small other fixes can easily be added to the game post jam.

I liked this game, it was simple to pick up and I was able to complete it. The music during the meteor showers was really cool and I enjoyed listening to it! I found the speed to be a little too fast once I fully upgraded so I couldn’t gain precision if I managed to be super close to the meteor but not quite there. Perhaps a slight interpolation of the speed from 0 to the max would help with precision a little bit.

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game!
Ι really like your idea with the interpolation of speed from 0 to max. Since most of the time I do at least a small post jam update that definitively is going to be on the list of changes/fixes. Thanks!

Great work! I loved missile command as a kid and love the inspiration you took from it. I really enjoyed being able to building my resources, getting that connection to the environment around me, and then giving it my all to defend it. Nice job!

Okay so I had a run going for a few minutes before I finally got the strategy. Restarted and got the a clean run! That was a fun time. Only critique is that I understand the vision of emulating an older style game, but some things like the overlapping of a meteor, building, and the vehicle get particularly messy. Overall, great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game!
There was a plan to fix the visual overlap between player's vehicle, buildings but unfortunately we run out of time.
It wouldn't be a jam game after all ;-)
One of the ideas was for a small 1px black border around the player's vehicle and if it worked use it on the meteorite as well while also adding the missing explode animation to it (another visual dropped due to time).

I totally get it. You’re right, we always leave things on the cutting room floor to get the game out for the jam ✂️😅

I enjoyed my time with Colony Defense! It felt good to build up the colony full of factories. In a future version, I'd like to see a black outline around the vehicle so that it can stand out a bit against the buildings. It also might help to remove the engineering building mechanic in favor of having an upgrade panel always displayed on the bottom of the screen. Maybe you could upgrade fire rate, bullet size, spray, etc. Finally, I'd like to see the defender mode be a bit more difficult! It might be neat to see meteorites of different sizes and speeds, and to have meteorites spawn constantly instead of having discrete waves for building and defending.

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game!
The black outline was indeed on the ideas we were testing but run out of time to implement.
The idea was for the engineering building to allow many more upgrades not only to your vehicle (similar to your ideas) but to also allow upgrades to buildings.
The initial idea was similar to the one you suggest with meteorites spawning all the time. Unfortunately this made the initial version of the game far more difficult and without time to tinker the difficulty we preferred for a simpler wave style of gameplay (at least for the jam version).
Thanks you for the suggestions about the meteorites.
Maybe some of those can be included (along with the necessary visual fixes that are definitively will be included) in a small post jam update after the rating period.

I tried so hard and got so far but in the end I couldn't build the plasma shield.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Don't give up! You can do it!
Which part did you find difficult? Shooting down the meteorites? Collecting resources and creating buildings?
You don't have to shoot down all the meteorites especially if shooting one down move you out of place and prevent you from  shooting down other incoming meteorites.

Submitted

Yeah I've been trying to leave some meteors and focus on one side to protect my factories, but it's just skill issue on my side lmao

So fun! Took me a while to get the hang of the mode switch, maybe its a little buggy if you switch too fast and press the action button? idk maybe it's my fault. But really liked the game. it was lots of fun. Would love the building no to be the same color as the player since it made it so difficult to find some times.
But overall a really fun little game. Congratulations!

Developer

Thanks you! Glad you enjoyed our game.
Thank you for the feedback about the mode switch.
Probably a bug in the mode switch controls. Easy to fix when uploads are unlocked after the voting period.

Took me a while to get the controls but after that it was good.

Developer

Thanks you! Glad you enjoyed our game.
What part of the controls you found difficult to understand/use?
The ingame help (when you press H) didn't help?

I really really like this, and had a great time playing. I love the idea - it hits that feeling an idle game (cookie clicker, etc.) gives you while also adding in more interactive, "game-y" elements. There's so much potential to build this out some more...I think you have a successful idea here.

My two pieces of constructive feedback from my playtime would be:

  • I feel like the player character blends into the buildings created, making it hard to keep track of where you are. Making the buildings or the character a more contrasting colour would solve this.
  •  Once I upgraded my Defender once, the rest of my time playing felt quite easy (I didn't feel the need to purchase any more upgrades). A revisit to the dificulty curve for future iterations may be required.

Really good job though, and well done! :D

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game.
Thank you for the detailed feedback. In the original design the were more upgrades and the waves have many more and harder to destroy meteorites. Unfortunately due to time restrictions (started working on the game late in the jam timeframe) they were cut from the final game.
Similar thing happened with the art since the player's vehicle. The current art is the original design before any buildings were created and I was in the process to redraw it but run out of time.

I like this! The graphics feel clean and the music is epic. The gameplay loop is good and stuff too. My only problem was that the control layout feels a little strange but that was fine and just took a minute to get used to

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our game and thank you for the feedback on the controls.
The idea behind the current control layout is to making it easy for both WASD using and Arrow keys using players.
Maybe we went a little too far...
